1957 Alvis TC108/G by Willowbrook - one of four examples known to have survived

This is the fourth of 14 Alvis TC chassis' bodied by Willowbrook of Loughborough. Alvis licenced the design from Carosserie Graber of Switzerland to modernise the TC21/100 Grey Lady. These were hugely expensive cars in their day at £3,500 on the road and it is believed that only four examples survive.
XYB 560 was purchased new from Allens, Berkley Square, Bristol and then first registered on February 1957 to Mrs J.M.V. Hill, Harptree Court, Somerset. The Hill family are still at the same address having been in the shipping industry and owning the dry dock where the SS Great Britain now resides. In period footage the car can just be made out parked on Clifton Suspension Bridge as the SS Great Britain is towed home along the river Avon. In 1959 the car was returned to the works to upgrade the brakes to the latest disc-brake specification. The receipts for this can be found amongst the comprehensive service history files.
All owners up to the current eighth owner are recorded. Number six was Roly Simmonds who launched marque specialist Red Triangle and by repute it was his favourite car. He sympathetically modified the car for light rallying and touring, using it in Switzerland and the USA and for this purpose fitted an alternator, a Kenlowe fan, a TE cylinder head giving 130bhp and a TF camshaft. Roly was in possession of an experimental radiator grille made by Alvis which Alvis MD J.J. Parkes used on all his cars. This grille is still fitted to the car today.
The current owner has invested much time and money to keep 'XYB' in a conditon where it can be used often and reliably for both local running around and long trips, enjoying several excusions across France to Le Mans. To this end, the car has been tuned by Pete Lander of Sigma Engineering and it now benefits from a high-ratio back axle (an overdrive unit was judged to be too invasive). The car is said by the vendor to have 'excellent road manners with text-book oil pressure', good brakes and cooling, happily holding its own in modern traffic conditions. This 'matching numbers' example still sports its original red leather interior and is a car that has been preserved and maintained, but never knowingly laid-up during its lifetime. In 2006 this actual car was the subject of an article in Classic and Sportscar magazine by Martin Buckley. The current MOT expires in September 2018 and within the file there are bills and a V5c.
