1930 Austin 20/6 Ranelagh Landaulette

The Austin 20 was original introduced in April 1919 in four-cylinder form. A number of coachwork styles were available and when fitted with light sporting bodywork the Austin 20 was capable of giving a 3 litre Bentley a run for its money. The model was to achieve fame at Brooklands in the hands of both privateers and Works Drivers.

By October 1926 a new Six-cylinder version of the Austin 20 was announced at the London Motor Show and the six-cylinder engine was to supersede the earlier model by 1929. The top of the range on the six-cylinder chassis was the Ranelagh Landaulette with a price tag of £675. A high-quality vehicle, many considered the large Austin to be the equal to the 20 hp Rolls Royce.

A 1930 model, this Ranelagh Landaulette has been in the current ownership for the past 33 years, having been acquired in poor condition it underwent an extensive restoration over a number of years. The engine was rebored with all new white metal bearings and the chassis completely overhauled. The body was substantially rebuilt using as much as possible of the original panelling and new wings were fabricated also in aluminium (rather than steel).

During the past 20 years the car has only covered a few thousand miles, having been used sparingly for rallies, events and weddings.

Today the restoration has mellowed nicely and the car presents with considerable charm and patina, retaining so many of its original features including the chauffer’s internal telephone, rear blinds, occasional seats and light fittings. The original Austin radiator thermometer is also fitted. Also included is the original extensive tool kit and handbook and list of spare parts. There are notes and various copies of photographs of the car as acquired in 1980s showing the extent of the restoration undertaken.

A rare and imposing Vintage Austin with considerable character and presence.
