1972' BMW 2002
When was the last time you saw one of these rare beasts? Here we have a great opportunity to own a stunning, unique and very cool BMW 2002.
This car was first registered in the UK and started life as a standard BMW 2002 in Red. In 2003 the car was exported to Ireland and lived in County Cork under the ownership of Frank for 10 years until he sold the car on to Mr Jones from Dublin. Mr Jones set about the restoration and had the vision to turn it into the stunning Turbo recreation you see today. The car came into my ownership as Mr Jones bought my Mercedes 190E and I exchanged this beauty for it, as I always intended to reduce my car collection and buy a 911 I am selling it on. Fully registered and road legal in the UK.
BMW 2002, 2.0 petrol Manual car, with just under 96k Miles. It is an early model 72 “round tail light model” these are considered more desirable than the later square type and is tax and MOT exempt.
As it is a turbo recreation the colour was changed to silver as bmw only produced the turbo model in silver and white. The car has had a full bare metal restoration involving removing all items glass, engine, gearbox (all running gear) etc. and taking it to a bare shell so that the car would be 100% free of any rust, all the internal cavities were treated with rust protection, the underside and chassis of the car were treated also. The wheels are period correct 1970’s magnesium mesh split wheels made by Ronal racing sourced from Germany along with the original Turbo petri steering wheel which also came from Germany. A Turbo body kit was fitted everything down to the screw placement for the wheel arches was done to the original turbo specs. Restoration pics are available.
The original engine was rebuilt and compression tested. The testing showed the engine as extremely healthy with excellent results. The car produces no smoke and pulls very healthily through all gears. The gearbox, clutch and brakes work perfectly also. All lights work as they should and all electrics work correctly.
In addition to this work I have completed a full service including oil, air filter, fuel filter, points, spark plugs and a new battery. I have also replaced the fuel pump as it was week and cold starting was a problem. Now the car starts immediately without the need for much choke and is in rude health. I have also fitted new windscreen washer Jets, pipe work and pump. Finally I have added the Turbo decals which I think finish the car off completely. All the parts were purchased from Jaymic, a renowned BMW specialist.
The car presents itself extremely well and is in superb condition. The interior is the original interior and has not been restored so whilst in great condition it’s 46 years old so does have patina. The body restoration was done 5 years ago and a few minor marks have been picked up but nothing to worry about. As with the interior the brightwork are all the original items from the car so are not new but in good condition, except for the rear bumper which looks brand new.
On the road the car drives really well and feels lively and solid. There is play in the steering and the gearbox selection has some wear but everything works perfectly.
There are not many BMW 2002’s on the market let alone special ones such as this, therefore this represents a great opportunity. It’s in great condition and has had loads of expensive work done and is a real eye catcher. It’s not perfect and improvements can be made if that’s what you want to do. Also there are endless options for further modifications, M3 engine, Track car, Turbo engine, or simply enjoy exactly as it is. The world is your oyster with this beautiful BMW.
I would consider classic PX, ideally not but try me. Thanks for looking.
