Seller's comments about 1940' Chrysler C-36 Traveller Coupe

Rally Preparation Services is very pleased to offer this awesome 1940 Straight 8 1940 Classic Chrysler Coupe in pale blue.

For 1940 Chrysler introduced a completely new range of cars with much more modern styling. In keeping with the latest trends, the front wings were integrated into the front bodywork and the bonnet line was lowered which gave the effect of a one-piece front end. The much vaunted and recently launched fluid flywheel with “Vacamatic” 3 speed transmission was now available across the range and indeed the only option on the bigger 8-cylinder cars. Chrysler’s marketing department were tasked with promoting theses new technical advances claiming, “The next best thing to a chauffeur is Fluid Drive” or alternatively asking “Why be a slave to the gear shift lever?” The Business Coupe models included five derivatives with trim differences and a choice of either six or eight cylinder engines. This example, a Traveller fitted between the Saratoga and New Yorker models and featured a safety speedometer which changed colour as speed increased.

More recently this car has enjoyed an interesting mix of top-level restoration to an exceptional and high level along with some sympathetic modernization, all with the view to taking part in long distance and marathon classic rallies and in particular the most recent Peking to Paris Rally; However, both we and the current owner were of the opinion that the original fluid flywheel transmission installation was not ideal for the tougher long-distance rallies and a conventional manual gearbox arrangement to be a better solution than the standard fluid flywheel. As the car was originally scheduled to compete on the 2019 Peking to Paris event but with insufficient time to source and install a suitable transmission that plan was shelved and the owner used a different car, meaning this marvellous Chrysler fondly named “Baby Blue” is now for sale in good time for those looking to take part in the 2022 Peking to Paris rally in a vintage car with a difference. Our recommendation for this car is to either continue with the rally preparation to best practice including a manual transmission or alternatively enjoy this striking classic car as it is. We can of course carry out all the rally preparation work required here at Rally Preparation Services.

The car is currently with RPS’ sister company, the SASCo storage facility and available for inspection.
