Seller's comments about 1971' Citroen SM Maserati

For the last 33 years, the property of a Parisian lady, this exceptional and desirable early SM, with 5-speed manual transmission, had but one owner prior, from new in 1971 until the last change of ownership in 1984. Since then, the car has lived in a private and heated underground garage beneath the lady’s apartment just off the Champs Elysees, simply epitomising the chic for which these most stylish of motor cars has become synonymous.

Supplied new in France and boasting the most thorough of history files, including original official Citroen service invoices, all in a large ring folder, the car is complete with its driver’s pack including Driver’s Handbook and fully stamped SM Service book, as well as its original duplicate set of keys. The present mileage of approximately 60,000 is fully documented.

So unmolested is this SM, that the possibly unused tool kit is present in its entirety, sitting in its special case within the spare wheel, and the original SM radio, a Continental Edison unit especially designed with its nomenclature running across its fascia to enable it to be read by both driver and passenger alike, remains in the centre console. This was the only radio specified by Citroen for fitment into these cars and has now become highly sought after in its own right. (There is no such thing as an ‘original Blaupunkt radio’, for example.) This car features the optional air conditioning.

Also one hundred per cent original is the interior and boot. When new, the SM was trimmed to an uncommonly high standard and this car’s trim remains beautifully preserved. Specified with the optional black leather, this remains supple and clearly very well cared for and the aroma of originality within the car will gratify those who appreciate such things. The boot looks as though it has never had anything more than a Hermes bag in it.

The paintwork is nigh on flawless and the body is that of a car which has never rusted. Best of all, it is in arguably the most desirable of all colours ever applied to the SM, Feuille Doree Metallisee.

Of significant importance now is the mechanical condition. With the original sodium filled valves prone to breaking, this car has just had the cylinder heads removed and rebuilt with stainless valves. Other known problem areas with the Maserati V6, including oil pump and timing chains, have been attended to and replaced. As a matter of course, the Weber carburetters have also just been comprehensively overhauled.

A thoroughly genuine and highly original example embodying all the ingredients that matter in a classic motor car.
