The XJ series of motorcars were the mainstay of Jaguar cars since 1968 and, in fact, was the last motorcar to have any input by Sir William Lyons, its founder. After the series I and II, a relatively short run of two-door XJ coupés with a pillarless hardtop body called the XJ-C were built between 1975 and 1978. The car was actually launched at the London Motor Show in October 1973, but it subsequently became clear that it was not ready for production, the economic troubles unfolding in the western world at this time seem to further reduced any sense of urgency about producing and selling the cars. They finally started to emerge from Jaguar showrooms only some two years later. These were priced higher than the four-door car so were immediately relatively exclusive.
The profile of these sought after touring cars was so attractive, with windows down, that they are often hard to find in good condition. Even harder to find are the manual overdrive examples of which only 100 were built. Even fewer were factory fitted with an overdrive unit.
This factory manual overdrive example is offered in its original colour combination of Old English White over a black leather interior and has had just two owners from new. The first owning the car for just 12 months before being purchased by the current vendors family 43 years ago. Presented in good order throughout the body is straight and the door shuts are good, the paintwork which was refreshed some years ago presents well but does show some signs of age. After many years in dry storage the Jaguar has recently be treated to much re commissioning at a cost of £3,360. The work included replacement petrol tanks an extensive brake overhaul, a MoT, and a major service. Supplied with various old Mot test certificates, a Jaguar drivers club booklet, Jaguar sales brochure and the original XJC owner's manual.
