Launched fifty-two years ago, the Beta – initially a four-door fastback with a rather anonymous design – has spread widely in the Lancia catalogue, whose diversity at the end of the 1970s should make the managers of the current brand situation pale…Presented in spring 1975, the Beta HPE (acronym meaning High Performance Estate, i. e. a high-performance station wagon) filled the gap in the range as a back-door saloon and occupied an unusual place within Lancia’s line-up, which at the time did not include proper station wagons.Even the modest base 1600 model, lively and sprightly, already offers genuine driving pleasure: its 100 HP are plenty to move a car that is much lighter and more compact than one might think at first glance.In Gazoline magazine, journalist Marco Visani recounts, a few years ago, a remark from a BMW executive to a Lancia colleague about the Beta HPE: "You’ve launched a masterpiece, but you haven’t understood it and it will die in your hands."
