Seller's comments about 1949' Land Rover Series 1
For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 1 80" Lights Behind the Grill in Heritage Green (1949).
Tax Exempt. A very, very early RO6 Chassis Number vehicle with a Galvanised Chassis.
We are delighted to be to present this early, Lights behind the grill Series 1, for sale. Built on 2nd November 1949 and delivered to the Ministry of Supply on 8th November 1949, it remained in service until 1963, when it was released. Since then, it has had just one former keeper. A heritage certificate for this R061 chassis number is included in the sale should the new owner wish to have the logbook reflect the build date rather than the release date from the military. This would also qualify the vehicle for MOT exemption. The military number is still present too, so further digging may uncover exactly what this truck did post WWII.
On the outside, this vehicle is in simply stunning condition. All the correct period features survive, without any nasty extras. The vehicle has a recent sand canvas, which is nice to see. Everywhere you look it is clear to see that this vehicle is finished to a very high standard. This vein continues to the interior, where it is all as you'd expect to find it - Spade Back seats in Tan colour, the spare is mounted correctly in the rear, and even the original information plates survive with the 'reach-through' doors without exterior handle... just as it would've had in 1949. This vehicle has the very rare and early 'Ring Pull' gearbox, which means that you can run the vehicle in 4WD without diff-windup, and this replaces the yellow lever in most Series Land Rovers.®
As can be seen from the photos, this very early example bears remarkable resemblance to "HUE 166", the very famous first example - and like Hue, this vehicle sits on a galvanised chassis which further adds to the desirability and charm. We think it looks stunning. The detail carries on into the engine bay, which is immaculate, and looks to have recent reconditioning and re-commissioning work done to it - even the block has been painted in line with 1949 build standards.
In summary, this is an opportunity to acquire a very rare vehicle, in stunning condition throughout. With a Galvanised Chassis and a pre-1950 build date, this vehicle is the Holy Grail of Land Rover® Ownership and is a must for any serious collection. If you want to join the most exclusive and rare ownership club, at a third of the price of a later, Land Rover® Reborn example, then this is for you.
MANY more photos available on our website, including of the rear of the vehicle, the engine bay, and further photos from other angles!
