In most markets including the UK, the ‘1275 GT’ was the ultimate Mini, but South Africa got one even more powerful - the lesser-known ‘1275 GTS’. Here we have one of the rare survivors in very fitting and truly South African, green and gold! Produced at Cape Town’s Blackheath plant, it was based on the Clubman shell and boasted a leyland 1275 engine running twin SU carbs (unlike the GT) with high-compression pistons, double valve springs and an increased compression ratio which afforded it a very respectable 74 bhp.Mini collectors the world over would likely want to get their hands on this car as it’s seldom they reach the open market.
