McLaren BMMR- 2/ 64.
This is the earliest known chassis from the "McLaren Team Works" to exist at this time, chassis BMMR-2/ 64. In 1964 Dan Gurney arranged for a McLaren Team car to be built for him to race in the 1965 season. At the time, these were the early stages of Bruce and his team constructing cars, even though Bruce was only twenty-six years old, the new teams oldest member. This was also the first known use of the Gurney/ Westlake Ford engine in competition.
This is the Gurney car, before the McLaren-Elva and Trojan cars. The owner has had this car for almost forty years. Extensive research has been done on this car, a huge amount of paperwork accompanies this purchase. This car was delivered to Gurney at Brands Hatch on August 30, 1965. After the race the car was shipped back to AAR for improvements to cooling and brakes. Subsequent to its sitting in the AAR shop, Dan sold the McLaren.
Unknown who bought the car from Dan and resold it to McLaren collector Bill Robbins around 1970. In 1979 the car was sold from Bill to Jim Wallace, who then sold it to our client in 1985. The car was restored, complete with new fiberglass body moulds from an M1A. The car was restored with the racing number 77 as of October 31, 1965 when Dan Gurney raced it in the L. A. Times Grand Prix at Riverside. BMMR-2/ 64 is a running, driving, nicely restored machine, totally authentic and iconic, as well as being the only known McLaren M1 team car raced by the legendary Dan Gurney.
An absolutely beautiful car, a true collector’s piece of motorsports history.
