Having created one of motoring's all time legends, the 300SL, Mercedes-Benz were keen that their next car be just as iconic.
Rudolf Uhlenhaut, their renowned engineer, decided that they were best served by bridging the gap between their two engines, the 300 and the 190, and in doing so the 230SL was born.
Revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, the new car was built upon a shortened W111 saloon chassis with independant double-wishbone front suspension. It featured the new 2.3 litre, 150bhp/120mph, fuel-injected straight-six engine and the angular, squared-off, body was considered the height of modern car design - lines which continued through their models until the early 1990's. It was aimed at a market who respected and acknowledged the Marque's racing pedigree yet didnt want a racecar for the road - instead something that was made with quality, reliability, good handling, bags of style but enough performance when needed.
The model sold well - 20,000 were made - as buyers appreciated the build quality and style of the car. In 1967, production ceased to make way for the 250SL.
The example we offer here is a 1965 UK delivered car finished in its original colours of Tunis Beige over black leather. It was fitted new with an automatic gearbox, hard-top, power steering and has 86,000 genuine miles from new. The car has undergone a very good restoration with no major original parts replaced and the history file contains footage of the work undertaken as well as many invoices for work carried out over the years.
The car is very low ownership, 3 in total, and as a result many original items and accessories have been lovingly retained, including; original manuals, Data Card, hard top, tool kit and almost every MOT certificate dating back to 1970.
If you've been seeking a classy and chic European classic in RHD one need not look any further than this fantastic and honest example of Mercedes-Benz's first 'Pagoda'.
