Mercedes-Benz 280 SE (W111) – February 1968
At a time when Mercedes-Benz were still manufactured by hand, with a detailed attention to detail, resulting in a unique build quality, born in 1961 from the W111 platform, the very elegant Coupé and Cabriolet bodies.
Imagined by Paul Bracq, its slender and long silhouette is nowadays considered timeless and one of the most beautiful of the brand, and it was with this model that the end of the iconic “heckflosse” design (or as it is affectionately known around here, tail) was marked. of fish).
At the time, this chassis, together with the most advanced mechanics, formed the top of the Mercedes-Benz range. It was the most technologically advanced platform that the manufacturer offered and in this two-door configuration, it was a true high-performance luxury car, meeting the heights of competition only in models such as the Corniche or the Continental Mulliner Park Ward, from Rolls-Royce and Bentley. respectively. It is without a doubt one of the most sought after and most interesting models of this German brand.
The example we have here, configured in Beige Gray 725 on dark brown leather 8010, tells a rather interesting story. It met its first owner in the United States in 1968 (where a large number of these units were exported), with whom it stayed for the first years of its existence. It was then acquired by a Portuguese family residing in Florida, USA, with whom it remained for practically its entire life.
In 1990 they decided to return to Portugal and the esteem for the 280 SE was such that they did not let it be left behind. Although it has never been meticulously restored, it is a car that has been extremely well maintained and cherished over the years and as such is in very good condition and retains an impressive level of originality.
Of all the optional equipment that the factory made available, this copy contains practically all the items, namely: Automatic box with “floor Shift”, 4 electric windows, electric sunroof, Blaupunkt telephony, air conditioning, power steering among others. We also point out that the engine and gearbox are original (matching numbers).
The last repairs and maintenance have already been carried out with the testimony in our possession, where we highlight the last intervention carried out by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center to seal leaks and make various adjustments, whose invoice (which we made available) totaled more than 8500€.
