Some cars don’t need to be explained to anyone. Park it somewhere on a square, let the sun shine on it, and a little group of people will gather of its own accord. Not because it was the fastest car of its day. Just because nearly everyone understands why it’s so appealing to look at. And that’s really the clever bit about the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL.Back in the 1950s, Mercedes-Benz had the 300 SL—an opportunity most people could only dream of. Brilliant, of course, but also rather exclusive. So Mercedes-Benz came up with a model that had to deliver the same feeling, but for a wider circle of enthusiasts. That became the 190 SL.The looks made it clear where the inspiration came from. The long bonnet, the low seating position, the elegant lines—you immediately spot the link with the 300 SL. Under the skin, Mercedes-Benz took a different approach. Not a pure sports car, but an automobile that lets you cover long distances without effort. Comfort was at least as high on the list as driving pleasure.The 1. 9-litre four-cylinder has overhead camshafts. Combined with the four-speed manual gearbox, the car drives calmly and predictably. Exactly as it was meant to be. Not a car that’s constantly challenging you, but one you can comfortably use for an entire day.In 2018, this example was fully restored down to the bare bodywork.
