These fantastic limited edition Minis are now becoming quite rare and they have always been one of my favourites from this era. They offer the looks of a Cooper with lower insurance and were built by Rover as a pre-cursor to re introducing the Mini Cooper, therefore they have the familiar white roof, Minilite wheels and Cooper trim. This example now has a sexy set of Suerlite wheels. They were an instant sales success and paved the way for Rover to re introduce the Mini Cooper. Only 2500 were produced in three colours: Black, Racing red and British racing Green. This Checkmate has only covered 67k in 36 years and is accompanied with a detailed service history folder which goes back many years and points to a cared for life. Its last owner cherished it for eight years and has upgraded it with some very useful extras that makes it an excellent jump in and drive Mini.On the road the Mini is great fun to drive. The original 998 engine is very healthy and near silent and the gearbox is taught and thanks to a quick shift, precise. This Racing Green benefits from having a brand new carb and a stage one kit with a Maniflow exhaust so it has some extra performance and a subtle Mini burble. Further upgrades include Gaz shocks with adjustable ride height and an excellent coil spring conversion that offers a smooth yet precise ride. The results are fantastic making this Mini a real drivers car that is also comfortable over the bumpy stuff.The interior is very well presented with its original Crayon black trim with matching door cards. It benefits from a full length Carbon effect dash housing the three clock binnacle with rev counter. It also has a very useful phone holder and USB socket instead of the original ashtray. It also has an upgraded remote control Kenwood CD player with Bluetooth and extra speakers housed under the rear seat. This model also has rear seat belts.The Mini has a very solid shell with body coloured floor pans, the correct vented sills and solid subframes. The paintwork is well presented and it belies its 36 year vintage.
