1930 Morris Cowley Saloon
Reg. no. MV 1838
Chassis no. 340837
Engine no. Unknown
In September 1926, the famous ‘Bullnose’ styling of the Morris Oxford and Cowley range, a relic from the Edwardian era, was replaced by more up-to-date styling, and the new cars were duly dubbed ‘Flatnose’ Morrises. Some of these cars featured all-steel bodies, Morris having embarked on a venture with an American company and founded 'Pressed Steel' earlier in the year, just across the road from the Morris plant. The changes continued under the skin; a new chassis was used, with semi-elliptic leaf springs all round plus Smiths friction type scissor shock absorbers. For the Cowley, however, four-wheel brakes remained a cost option, and the Hotchkiss-derived 1,548 cc four-cylinder engine was retained. These cars stayed in production until 1931, selling well, after which the range was re-designed again.
This late-vintage four-door saloon was registered on the 20th of August, 1930. The vendor describes it as being in ‘oily rag’ condition – a condition that is becoming ever more popular as the preference now, at least on this side of the Atlantic, seems to be on preservation over restoration! Within the last year, the brakes have been relined, a new 12-volt battery has been fitted and discreet LED flashers added, to minimise the risks encountered when signalling by hand. Said to be running well, this seems a useable and characterful example of one of Britain’s most popular vintage family cars. There are some old MOT certificates in the file in addition to a V5c and an older V5.

This and 60 other classic cars will be sold at auction, on March 4th at Allington, Chippenham, Wiltshire SN14 6LJ
