Seller's comments about 1963' Shelby Cobra 289

This Shelby Cobra 289 was built in 1963. The first owner was the FoMoCo General Office Accounting. FoMoCo obviously standing for Ford Motor Company. The car was delivered to the Ford District Office in Jacksonville, Florida and used for promotional purposes.
Originally this Shelby Cobra had a Bright Blue finish, chrome rocker cover, WSW tyres, a luggage rack and a $ 3, 55 5 quarts worth of antifreeze. In total the invoice shows a new price of $ 5, 171. 55 including a $ 300 FoMoCo discount.
Following the promotion the car went to its first private owner who drove around in it until 1972. After that it was used in drag and vintage races in the 70’2 & 80’s. Major rebuild was done after that, including fitting a HEMI engine and significant modification to the bodywork and suspension. It sadly did not improve the car’s performance. On the other hand it did not mean curtains for this rather unique Shelby. Better still it history got a lot better.
In 1989 a Californian buyer restored the car back to its original road-worthy spec. He participated in various historic races. Whilst the car was once again presentable the next owner went a step further. He took the car to Larry Pond of Gemini Racing Systems. Pond was given a blank cheque to bring the car up to concourse condition. The very extensive body-off restoration was topped by giving the car a brilliant Guardsman Blue finish.
Not only did the owner drooled over his car; the car was so stunning it became the Shelby display car at the official Shelby American Ltd no less. In later years the car was fitted with a roll-cage, became a single-seater with other essential racing essentials and took part in various important race meeting such as the 2012 Goodwood Revival and Old-Timer Grand Prix of 2013 with Jochen Mass at the wheel.
In 2014 it was time for another complete rebuild, this time carried out by Torsten Schwartz at Total performance. After all the work and modification were done the car now produced 410 hp. The car has recent expired 2012 FIA papers and is ready to take part in events such as the Le Mans Classic, the Monterey Road Races, Goodwood Revival, Spa Classic to name a few., The car has barely been used since it last big overhaul and remains in peak condition with a beautiful subtle patina.
This is one Shelby Cobra with meticulously kept rich provenance and wonderful names attached to it. This Cobra is in absolute brilliant shape, a dream to drive, albeit a rough one.
It still cries out “handle with care” which is just how we like our Cobra’s!
