Seller's comments about 1973' Volkswagen Camper Type 2

Super South African RHD 1973 Volkswagen Type 2 Baywindow

Price just reduced by £1000 to sell

Manufactured in The Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg this Type 2 Baywindow was exported to South Africa most likely as a ‘CKD’ (complete knock down kit) and reassembled at the VW plant at Uitenhage SA. It remained in South Africa until 2017 when it was imported to the UK.

Little is known of its history in South Africa but VW ‘Kombis’ have a far better quality of life in SA than in the UK due to the climate, altitude and absence of salt on the roads. It has tidy bodywork finished in light blue and a very solid chassis, cross beams, jacking points etc.

It is an original right hand drive vehicle with a 1600cc VW engine and a Devon roof. The reading is 90,279 kms but sadly I do not have the paperwork to guarantee this.

Despite now being exempt from both vehicle tax and MOT (under the new 40 year ruling) and it has a new MOT dated 14/8/19.

Since I imported ‘Nelson’ the following parts have all been replaced: exhaust manifold, starter motor, new battery, HT leads, spark plugs, distributor cap, Flamma roof light, front and rear indicator lens covers, rear door rubber, sliding door rubber, front window scraper, drop arm pivot bushes and pins replaced, steering drag link arm, new Madmatz front carpets, driver and passenger Securon inertia reel seat belts, sliding door step trim, sliding door handle, washer tank and electric motor, new horn. It has had the timing and carburetor checked as well as a new oil change and filter. A set of standard 15inch steel wheels have been sandblasted and powder-coated in white and they have been finished off with a new set of Wolfsburg Logo chrome/polished stainless steel hubcaps including the spare wheel which is mounted on the front of the campervan.

The interior has been retrimmed by the previous owner in SA in a period colour, Westfalia style vinyl fabric on all seats door cards, rear engine bay cushion etc. The roof lining has also been replaced.

It has an original concertina Devon style pop up roof and a full width rock ‘n’ roll bed which converts to a spacious double bed.

The VW baywindows are very popular with young families and Nelson could easily be made to accommodate two adults and two children: I have an original Devon roof bunk (not fitted) and this is available if required. In addition there a child’s bunk can be mounted across the vehicle over the passenger and driver’s seats making Nelson a 4 berth vehicle.

Please note the photographs shows Nelson with a Clearcut Conversions Daypod Kitchen Unit and this features a gas burner and a sink with a 10 litre water tank and an electric pump. The great benefit of the daypod portable unit is that you have the option to lift the unit and cook outside. This gives you more space inside and stops you filling Nelson with cooking smells.

I have owned 4 VW campervans and this one starts on the button every time and runs very smoothly and so would be ideal should you ever wish to consider renting Nelson out (c.£5-700 per week). There are now excellent driveaway awnings specifically designed for VW Type 2s (see Dubpod) and these transform camping to a true glamping experience with full height space and masses of accommodation potential.

Nelson offers a new owner the opportunity to add your own style and finish to an ever appreciating vehicle. Nelson has an agreed insurance valuation of £19,000
