Built by the Willys-Overland Corporation of Toledo, Ohio, the Whippet was aptly named - it was small and swift.
Introduced in 1926, it was America's smallest car, with a 100. 25-inch wheelbase. Two engines were available, a four and a six. This car we have here is a 4cylinder example.
The Whippet was in production from 1927 until early 1931 and during the first year of production 110, 000 Whippets were sold and in 1928 Willys-Overland shot into third place behind Chevrolet and Ford with 315, 000 cars out the door. How Cool Is That :)

We mostly know Willys today for Jeeps and Jeepsters, but the Whippet was one of the most popular cars of its day.
Sadly, the Great Depression did for the Whippet and it was discontinued in 1931. Willys-Overland limped along until World War II when the military demand for Jeeps which, although first designed by the American Bantam Motor Car Company of Butler, Pa., were built in huge quantities by both Ford and Willys-Overland and helped to save the Toledo company.
The firm capitalised on the Jeep and continued production until being bought by Kaiser Motors in 1953. And, as everyone knows, the Jeep is still with us, although it gone through several owners, and is about the only reminder of the Willys-Overland Company.
So, if you're looking for a dependable, easy-driving pre-war car, and if the odds are poor that a Willys-Overland Whippet is on your radar, then think again. After all, they were only selling a quarter-million of them per year - I mean how good could they be?
Car will be sold WOF'd and Registered if sold in New Zealand.
