Introduced in 1958, the Star Sapphire represented the pinnacle of Armstrong Siddeley’s post-war motor cars, and was the final development of the distinguished Sapphire range. Building upon the earlier Sapphire models, the Star Sapphire was conceived as a luxurious high-performance saloon capable of competing with some of the finest British cars of the period. Its imposing styling, spacious and well-appointed interior and effortless road manners made it particularly well suited to long-distance touring. Powered by an enlarged 3, 990cc straight-six engine breathing through twin carburettors, the Star Sapphire combined impressive performance with considerable refinement. Standard equipment included power-assisted steering, automatic transmission, concealed door hinges and an independent rear-compartment heater, placing the model firmly among Britain’s finest luxury cars of the period. The Star Sapphire would ultimately become Armstrong Siddeley’s final production motor car, bringing more than four decades of car manufacture to a close in 1960. With little more than 900 saloons produced during its comparatively short production run, surviving examples are now relatively rare.
Finished in two-tone Blue with a Blue leather interior, ‘DSL 412’ has been in the current vendor’s ownership since 1998. During the late 1990s the car was subject to a restoration which included recommissioning of the engine and a full respray. Further paintwork was carried out ten years ago. According to the vendor the car runs and drives well, and has been in regular, often monthly, use. It was recently shown at the Armstrong Siddeley National Day at Swindon in July 2026, before which it had a comprehensive service, for which an invoice is present within the history file. The accompanying documentation also includes its original driver’s handbook, a workshop manual, spare parts list, current V5C and various items of older paperwork.
Presented today as an older restoration, ‘DSL 412’ offers considerable potential for its next custodian. The two-tone paintwork and chrome work now show signs of age in areas and would benefit from attention, while some restoration of the interior woodwork and leather would further enhance the cabin. This rare and imposing Star Sapphire represents an appealing opportunity to acquire Armstrong Siddeley’s flagship model, offered at No Reserve after some 28 years in the current ownership.
