FERRARI - 1964 Series 1 – Ferrari 330 GT 2 plus 2

The 60s was an era as very few would disagree! A period in time when some of the most beautiful cars were born – Ferrari excelled, in a few short years producing some cars now underwriting a phenomenal upturn in values and cementing these cars as key for ownership by collectors worldwide.
In early 1964 at the Brussels Salon the 330 GT 2 Plus 2 made its first public appearance. The car was a successor to the 330 America & had an entirely new body and a longer chassis .The body was designed by Pininfarina, who at this time also constructed & trimmed the cars before shipping them to the Ferrari factory for the fitting of the drive train & mechanical components. This car was substantially different to the preceding model, featuring a canterd twin headlamp arrangement, which gave the front of the car a transatlantic look. The cabin, far smoother & morphed into a more bulbous rounded tail with horizontal one piece rear light assemblies.
The re design of the interior gave rear passengers further leg room, with no sacrifice of comfort to front seat passengers. Series one cars being ultra desirable, featuring both the twin headlights & the iconic Borrani wire wheels which gave way to cast alloys in 1965 as the series II car arrived.
The engine was similar to the 400 SA in capacity but differs in detail such as bore & stroke.
The 330 GT mark 1 had a 4 speed gearbox with a single plate dry clutch in unit with the engine. At the rear of the gearbox was fitted a Laycock de Normanville electrically operated overdrive unit. This was in effect a 5th gear & worked as the car was in top. The excellent spaced ratios all had syncro. Power was transferred to the rear wheels with a one piece prop-shaft located by semi – elliptical leaf springs & two radius arms. Telescopic shocks were mounted concentrically with small coil springs above the axle– road holding & comfort ahead of its time. The 8/34 ratio was good for 245 kmh (152 mph )at 6,400 rpm in overdrive!
Front suspension forged Wishbones all mounted on beautifully engineered pins & bushes. A swinging cup structure ensured the spring was never bent, an anti roll bar mounted on rubber bushes gave assured handling.
The four wheel disc brake system operated via a double master cylinder, two servos and two reservoirs that meant dedicated systems front & rear. In ideal conditions the car could stop in 375 feet from 100 mph.
This 12 Cylinder Ferrari from 1964 is an absolute pleasure to drive, all the more so as the car can be shared with two or three passengers. The howl from the 12 Cylinder engine – something to behold.
The car offered for sale, has been the subject of a ground up meticulous restoration – one of the very best I have ever seen.
