This is without a doubt the absolute best Jaguar MKIV we have ever seen. This is true collector’s car quality, quite simply first class in every respect as result of the most magnificent, superbly executed restoration by a Germany based Jaguar specialist who proudly displayed the car at Techno Classica Essen in 2016. The Jaguar sold on the stand at Essen to its one UK owner, a prominent South Wales based classic car collector who imported the car into the UK at a cost in excess of £100,000. In such remarkable condition, Hagerty Insurance agreed to value this show standard car at £140,000 realising the cost of replicating a car to this standard would be incredibly difficult for a figure below this.
The Jaguar MKIV 3.5 Litre Saloon was manufactured on the 15th October 1948 and distributed by Brylaw Motors, Australia where it spent its early life. We believe the Jaguar was first registered in Victoria and by the 1970's was in need of restoration work. By the mid 1970's the restoration was underway, some of the running gear had been rebuilt but the owner didn't manage to complete the work. Around 20 years later in 1995 he sold the car to an airline pilot who shortly after buying the Jaguar transferred to Queensland and left the car on a farm near Geelong in Victoria. In 2006 the Jaguar sold again with the intention of being used as a donor for a DHC, but thankfully this did not materialise, and the car was sold to the restorer in Germany, requiring a full restoration in around 2012.
Finally, after 40 years of attempted restoration, the MKIV was stripped to the bare chassis and completely rebuilt from the ground up over several years. The Jaguar was not only finished to a standard better than when new in 1948, it was also uprated and improved to ensure it was more usable and capable of modern driving. Upgrades include a Jaguar five speed gearbox, alternator, electronic ignition, modern wiring harness, electric cooling fan, hazard warning lights, customer built stainless steel exhaust system, modern seat rails and modified rear engine oil seal.
Two albums containing around 200 photographs accompany the car detailing the magnificent, in depth full rebuild. The body was taken off the chassis and completely taken back to bare metal. The chassis was completely bare, restored and beautifully painted, the body completely rebuilt and painted in two tone Cream off the chassis. The body was painted inside and outside, the chassis was built up and all running gear completely overhauled. The original 3.5 litre engine was rebuilt, new five speed gearbox installed, rebuilt rear axle re-fitted and the braking, suspension, fuel, cooling and electrical systems completely overhauled. The rebuilt bodyshell was re-fitted to the chassis and all brightwork renewed. Hours of workmanship went into this careful restoration, all doors were built back up with rebuilt and renewed components and with all woodwork out of the car it was professionally restored and re-fitted to the car, all gauges and instruments were overhauled and the interior then completely re-upholstered to an exceptional standard. The level of detail is unbelievable, the engine bay was finished to a concours standard, as was the boot compartment and complete tool kit.
On arrival in the UK in 2016, the Jaguar was MOT tested and registered YWG 617. The Jaguar was now part of a wonderful classic car collection but as the car had been rebuilt with consideration to modern day traffic, the car was to be driven and enjoyed when possible. In May 2017, the MKIV drove from Cardiff to Windsor to take part in the Royal Windsor Jaguar Festival. Over 1200 Jaguars took part in the Jaguar Enthusiast Club event at the invitation of the Prince Philip Trust Fund. Over recent years the Jaguar has been on regular display, attending many Jaguar Enthusiast Club South Wales Region events. The Jaguar has proven faultless on the road, completely reliable and quite simply exceptional to drive.
Four years on since completion of the rebuild YWG 617 is still in magnificent condition. The car is ready to drive and enjoy and at such a high standard it can grace any collection worldwide. This car has been restored with no expense spared and on inspection this is quite clear. The bodywork is stunning, the two-tone paint finish exceptional, chrome work is like new, the underside resembles a new car, and the interior is sumptuous, luxurious with stunning leather work, wool headlining and gleaming re-veneered woodwork. The engine bay is magnificent, as is the boot compartment and tool kit, the car is without doubt the best MKIV we have seen. On the road this Jaguar is glorious with its upgrades ensuring this is the ultimate 1940's Jaguar that is capable of regular use and serious mileage. The original engine is super fit, the five-speed gearbox delightful and with increased reliability the car offers so much confidence. This is a real collector's piece, a car to cherish and grace any collection.
