HISTORIC
BACKGROUND: The now famed R107 Series SL Roadster began its reign in
1971 and proved both popular and competitive through its final year of
production in 1989. It was the longest
lived car line in Mercedes history (exceeded only by the G-class luxury SUV).
Considered timeless, the best examples of the R107 are coveted to this dayVEHICLE
HISTORY – in the 1970s, this car was purchased by a car enthusiast
uncle. He owned the car for a very long
time, after which it was passed on to other car enthusiasts in the same
family. So it has had the highly
desirable history of appreciative and caring owners who shared an emotional bond
with the car and the man who brought it into the family. Used often in parades, it still has the
PA-system/sound effects box as shown. As we can
find no evidence of re-painting, we believe that the paint is original, which
is something that a new generation of “originality collectors” really
appreciate. The car presents itself well
both on the road and in your driveway, but please expect wear/patina consistent
with paint that is over 40 years old.
Likewise, there is a chip/ding “here and there” but really minimal for
the car’s 1976 vintage. We show this in
the 100+ images, so please take a look.EXCELLENT
COLOR COMBINATION…No online resource seems to be able to fully decode the
underhood data-plate, though we do see “618” which would seem to coincide with
Mercedes’ Mimosa Yellow color. It
contrasts beautifully with the black interior.#10704412029647

REPORT…the car is a joy to drive and gets enthusiastic and approving
attention everywhere it goes. Like most
1976 emission-era cars, it can be a bit rough on start-up with today’s fuels,
but once warmed-up it is a nice driving car.
In 1976, few would have dreamed that this car would still be proudly
cruising the boulevard 43 years later, but with loving care and continual
maintenance…here it is! A tribute to
both Mercedes engineering and appreciative family ownership all these years.Nearly
$7000 in recent (2016/17) maintenance investments…the
near-new Michelin Defender tires are nitrogen filled ($539.55). Brake, subframe mount, and fuel system work
was performed ($5336.23). And finally, new mufflers and associated exhaust work
was also completed ($793.03).During
the photoshoot, we checked the gauges, exterior lighting, radio (works with one
speaker), horn, windshield washers/wipers, and power windows…ALL of which
worked. Please note that the Air
Conditioning would (at minimum) require re-charging and perhaps additional work
as well…which is the norm for 1976-era cars.
There is also some “play” in the steering. The lighter was not functioning. The directionals illuminated, but did not
blink. We could not find the foglamp control and thus cannot verify their
operation. Power antenna up/down does
not work. LOCATION: Atlanta
Metro Area (Gainesville, GA…approx. 55 miles north of Atlanta, GA)THE FIRST
29 PICTURES will give you a general overview of this handsome 1976
Mercedes-Benz 450SL. For serious buyers,
we have included many more images (100+ in total) which are organized in sections
including Exterior/Top/Wheel/Tires, Interior, Trunk, Engine Compartment, and
Undercarriage. We strongly suggest that
you look at ALL 100+ images because we want you to see EVERYTHING. ODOMETER
NOTE...the odometer read 86,497 at the time of photo-shooting. We believe that this is likely the original
mileage, but due to the design limitations of odometers of this era (and the
lack of documentation all the way back to 1976) we cannot warrant the mileage
as original or accurate. Consistent with
cars of this vintage, the Georgia-issued title reads “Exempt” for mileage.PAYMENT must
be made via Bank to Bank wire transfer, or in cash. IMPORTANT
DOCUMENT & CONDITION OF SALE REMARKS: Bill
of Sale and Vehicle Registration documents will be provided to the Buyer. The buyer
will receive a Bill of Sale and signed-off Georgia Title after cash payment, of
full bank clearance of as wire transfer (no checks). This
Vehicle is sold strictly as-shown and on a final as-is basis without any
warranties expressed or implied due to age. Even the very best and most
valuable classics will require additional maintenance and service - often
without warning. Therefore, please expect to continue - as the
new owner and caretaker of this classic - to perform additional
maintenance and repairs. We hope that you are able to enjoy the car
without the need for an immediate repair - but understand that this indeed
could be found necessary. As seasoned collectors know, every time you
start (or attempt to start) a classic car is a new experience...it could be a
wonderful ride, or a new repair to undertake. That is the nature of the
hobby, and this car (or any classic car) should not be purchased if you are not
prepared for this reality. We have presented the car accurately to the best of
our ability, but oversights are possible. Therefore serious prospective
buyers are welcome to make an appointment to examine the vehicle in
person. All sales are final. This car
is currently very lightly driven for casual enjoyment on a local basis and has
not been tested for extended highway travel.
For this reason (and also due to its age) we highly recommend that it be
transported to its new owner’s locale. We remind
you to be sure to review ALL the images and ALL the captions for this classic because
- in addition to this description - they relate important information too!QUESTIONS?...after reviewing ALL the images and reading the entire
description, please call Jim Murphy if you have any questions:

NOTE...IMPERFECTIONS – The car is very nice, most certainly
one of the nicest of this year/make/model in highly original condition. But
because there is no such thing as a perfect car, please expect some
imperfections. Because we endeavor to place the camera everywhere
that you can look, you will notice most imperfections yourself. However, we
specifically “point” to blemishes that go hand in hand with this car’s age and
originality.
