This 1953 Studebaker starlight Commander looks more like a sleek custom than a factory car.
In 1953 the beautiful sloping lines and sporty look won first price at the prestigious NY school of fashion design award. Designed by famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy and his design team, this coupe is considered to be one of the best looking cars ever made.
This Example has truly been around the world. It spent most of its life in Texas where it was completely restored in 2008. In 2009 it was sold and shipped to a collector in Australia. Later it was sold to a English collector who had it shipped and registered in the UK.
The cream white exterior and copper beige interior compliments the clean lines of this coupe very well. The rebuilt 232ci (3.8L) Hi compression V8 has plenty of power and the 3 speed with overdrive makes it real smooth cruiser on the highway. The starter is upgraded to 12V and the rear lights have 6V LED brake and turning signal bulbs giving excellent light even in daylight.
The bodywork is exceptionally straight and the paint is in very good condition, the chrome is close to perfect and interior is beautiful. Some imperfections to be expected, but the restoration holds up very well after 12 years.
The original Advertising for this car in the 50’s read:
The headline reads “Excitingly Different, Studebaker’s European look!!”
“Low & racy in design like a costly foreign sports car! Thoroughly American in comfort! Down to earth on price”
What a marvellous advert!!
