Founding Grand Prix Engineering in South Nowak, Connecticut, he also became the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club of America’s Technical Advisor. Gifted a dilapidated Bentley MKVI Saloon by his wife Sybil in 1965, Mallalieu transformed it into an aluminium-bodied two-seater sportscar which he christened the Barchetta. Such was the acclaim that the latter received when its creator returned to the UK in 1970, plans were soon put in place to use it as the basis of a handbuilt production model. Based in Wootton, Oxfordshire, Mallalieu Motor Cars completed some forty-four Bentley MKVI and R-Type based machines. Each one was tailor made and took five months to complete. The straight-six engine (of 4¼ or 4½ Litre capacity) and four-speed manual gearbox were relocated eighteen inches further back in the cruciform-braced chassis and the suspension recalibrated for a significantly lower kerb weight. Performance, handling and braking were all improved over the original Crewe design. Commissioned by James Christian Culverwell Esq, Mallalieu Build Number 021 (chassis B199CD) emerged from their Works on February 1st 1979 complete with a rejuvenated 4¼ litre engine (B295E) and mechanicals. Bodied in aluminium over a square section steel tube frame, the 2+2-seater was finished in White with Tan leather upholstery. Completed to left-hand drive specification and road registered as ‘MNV 400’, the reconfigured Bentley was the subject of articles in the Illustrated London News and Old Motor Magazine. It also appeared in ATV and BBC television programmes (Mr Culverwell likening his ownership experience to a love affair when interviewed for the former piece). Inherited by Geoffrey Tom Culverwell Esq during 1990, the Mallalieu passed to Brian Houseman of Old English Classics who had it converted to right-hand drive (complete with a demountable gear lever for easier ingress and egress). Sold to one of Mr Houseman’s Japanese clients in 2000 before being repatriated thirteen years later, the 2+2-seater had been repainted Green by the time that the vendor bought it during May 2021. An authority on Mallalieu cars, he has primarily entrusted its maintenance to the renowned Bentley specialist Padgett Motor Engineers with expenditure during his tenure reputed to have exceeded £15, 000. 2022 saw the petrol tank fuel tap replaced, the radiator repaired and pressure tested, the battery renewed and five Michelin X radial tyres fitted. 2023 witnessed the battery isolator switch under the driver’s seat being replaced, the ignition system refurbished (distributor serviced, new rotor arm / condenser / points / plugs) and the brake system overhauled. 2025 brought a refurbished exchange dynamo and new *** belt plus a Woodruff key / keyway failure on the pinion shaft which resulted in the crown wheel and pinion being exchanged for a matched pair and a full differential and bearings inspection being conducted by Padgetts. Treated to a new coil when returned to the same firm for servicing earlier this year, ‘MNV 400’ is understood to have covered a mere 20, 572 miles or so since being ‘reborn’ as a Mallalieu. Prominently featured in ‘Bentley Specials and Special Bentleys’ by Ray Roberts, the cars that Derry Mallalieu and his family built are justly regarded as among the best of their kind. Falling within the first half of production, Build Number 021 boasts a higher Bentley content than some of its later siblings which used lesser componentry in a bid to save costs (a Mallalieu was not far short of Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow / Shadow II money when new). Worthy of close inspection, this handsome Bentley is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, handbook, printed and CD copies of its period press and TV appearances and paperwork file. ** Bidding will take place live at the venue, online via our H&H website, by telephone and commission - T&Cs apply** Entry by catalogue and can be purchased for £20 (admits 2...
