After months and months of work, and far higher costs than we expected (all restorers find that out) we have finally finished MG J2 Chassis No. 2939. When first purchased out the back of an old lorry in Shrewsbury we thought it wouldn't take long, as we knew we had an engine that had been rebuilt by Barry Foster.(In the end that's about all we had to be excited about).
I'm afraid it came without its original registration, and regretfully the club's chassis file records do NOT record the original registration. Delivered new on 3rd April 1933 by Scottish Motor Traction to Mr. A Purdin of Stirling, the Club, Edinburgh City Archives and the Kithead Trust have been unable to get the ORIGNAL reg. No., so I have begun the hair-tearing process of obtaining a proper age-related No. from DVLA to save the new owner the problem. If any body knows the original reg. of J2939, tell me now as any age related reg. will be non removable once allocated.

So having a great rebuilt engine and not much else comparable we stripped it to the chassis, completely rebuilt that, overhauled the body, had it properly painted in its original factory colour (Carmine Red), got a pair of new bonnet sides and front apron, but using all else that was original, including the correctly stamped original bonnet tops.

The engine, which has a full flow oil filter system, was checked from top to bottom, the carburettors fully overhauled, together with the radiator,shock absorbers, brakes and steering.
The instruments were all fully rebuilt by John Marks, new engine-turned de-luxe dash fitted and the car cloth-wired throughout with discreet turn signals lost in the 'Pork Pie' rear lamps and the metal medallion 'King-of-the-Road' Lucas 1130 side lamps. The turn switch is neatly out of sight but easy to reach.
I have fitted a very, very rare horn-button mounted mirror on an original plinth (hen's teeth) and original stem.
All the firewall was rebuilt, a new solid-centre, twin 'O' ring fuel tap fitted to the tank, all new fuel lines were properly clipped and the correct long thin battery fitted in its original tray with a inconspicuous master switch placed for easy access.

Full automatic lubrication system, halogen h'lamp bulbs in original reflectors, stop lights, Blockley tyres and of course correct CJF2 cutout fuse box properly charging through correct Rotax PLC 2 ign./light switch.

The original windscreen was fully restored and fitted along with 'Brooklands' aeroscreens and both right & left hand Lucas medallion type 160 original mirrors.
Although I have fitted all chrome headlamps with factory hinged stoneguards, I have also provided a second set of shells, but painted to match the car for anybody who prfers to be totally correct in this department. (The rims & guards are immdiately interchageable). I kept the all-chrome lamps on ths occasion as the car was supplied with these originally, but the choice is there for you, as I know painted shells are the expected norm.

I obtained one of the last sets of seats & trim to be made by Mike Collingburn (lucky the new owner!) and had Pickerngs of Bradford tailor fit a new Double-duck black roof, full & half tonneaux and all wool black Wilton carpets.

The car will need further running-in and possibly a touch more carb tweaking as it settles down, but for someone who wants one of the most accurate J2s along with a pedigree rebuild, I recommend you come to view it as soon as possible. And before I hear you mutter its expensive try doing one yourself to this standard. The proofs in the pudding. Hope you like it. (The passenger door is not fully closed, sorry) Please ring to view.
