1936 MG VA Saloon - Significant History- Olympia Motor Show Car

Introduced for 1937, the VA series - or One and a Half Litre as it was officially known, was to be the replacement for the NB Series Magnette. Powered by a twin carburettor version of the Wolseley 12/48 engine, the MG VA was available in Tourer, Saloon and Drop Head Coupe versions.

Presented for sale here is an historically interesting MG - this car bears chassis number VA 0251 and was the first ever example of the VA Saloon produced. the car was exhibited at the 1936 Olympia Motor Show and was also used by the factory for many publicity photographs and by the press for road test reports. During this period the factory fitted the registration number ABL 999 and a photograph of the car bearing this registration is included.

There are several features which are unique to this vehicle and did not appear on production models – two notable features being the fitment of twin spare wheels and the inclusion of the special ‘Octagon’ type Lucas side-lamps, which had appeared on the MMM series MGs previously.

In recent times, the original engine has been rebuilt and bored out to 1.7 litres as with the police specification VA models which were supplied to various constabularies.

The car was discovered by a former owner in 1980 and subsequently exported to Holland where it underwent a meticulous restoration over the next ten years.

During the Winter of 2008/2009, the original 1936 engine was rebuilt and together with the correct gearbox were refitted to the car.

This MG VA was to return to the UK in August 2008 and with the help of the MG Car Club, the original 1936 registration number was returned to the car.

Today the car presents in very good order – a testimony to the quality of the restoration. There are many delightful period features and the original toolkit, workshop manual and various spares are also supplied. The original leather upholstery remains in extremely good condition and the whole interior exudes a delightful Art Deco ambiance.
The car comes with extensive history and period information along with photographic records of the rescue and subsequent restoration.
