For sale in our Chicago showroom is a rare antique 1922 Overland 4. The Overland Automobile Company was founded in 1903 and ceased production in 1926 along the way creating high quality and beautiful cars for the multitudes. In 1922 Overland was competing with Ford, Buick, Chevrolet Dodge and Studebaker and was offered at an affordable price and provided great value. Compared to the over 1 million Model Ts sold in 1922 productions numbers of the Overland Touring Car came in at just 95,410. This was less than any other competitor of the time which makes this one very rare car indeed. Although most cars of the era looked similar they were set apart by certain innovations of the time and the Overland was no exception.Unlike the semi-elliptical springs used in the Model T the Overland offered a 3-Point Triplex cantilever suspension for a more innovative ride and handling. In order to prove how strong and durable this new suspension was, Overland dealers would jump the car in between 2 ramps. This display known as "The Overland Jump" became part of the dealer demonstration and no doubt helped to boost sales. This '22 rides and handles very nicely and is remarkably easy to drive. Once the ignition is turned on and the electric started engaged the 143.1 Cubic Inch L-Head 4cylinder fires right up and idles very nice. Unlike the Model T with its pedal shifting the Overland is brought up to speed via a 3-speed sliding shaft transmission and oil-filled clutch using a standard H-Patter for shifting. With 27 horsepower at the time the Overland was capable of speeds up to 45 Miles per hour and 20 miles per gallon. Not too shabby for 1922.The interior of this Overland is basic but nicely finished in red upholstery with black tones that looks great in contrast to the black exterior and top. All interior components including the dash light, AMP gauge and speedometer are in working condition as is the horn that is operated from the middle of the steering wheel.....exactly where a horn should be.
