Upon its debut in 1907, the Rolls-Royce 40/50 horsepower “Silver Ghost” was considered to be the most advanced motorcar money could buy. With Henry Royce’s impressively over-built 7,428cc side-valve inline six-cylinder engine as the centrepiece, the Silver Ghost was a true engineering marvel and a great leap forward in automobile design. The magnificent engine was both incredibly strong but was also light weight thanks to the use of an alloy crankcase. Of course, the Ghost was more than just the engine; the chassis was similarly overbuilt to withstand virtually anything an owner could throw at it. Such was its strength that a vast majority of the approximately 6,500 Silver Ghosts built over its 18 years in production still survive today.

Brief history

26PE was ordered by a Major Edward Fitzgerald of Mayfair in 1918. The chassis was driven to Paris where the Coachbuilders Henri Labourdette was commissioned to build a Salamanca Cabriolet body. Due to a long waiting list after WWI the completed car was not delivered until 1920.

Four years later the Major arranged for the original body to be replaced by a Park Ward Touring Body.
Sadly the Major passed away in 1931 and 26PE was then shipped to Australia and continued to change ownership until around 1952.
In the 1960s a replacement period engine was fitted as the original engine (M.157) was replaced by a Ford V-8. During the 1970s the car changed hands with two further keepers. In 1982 26PE returned to the UK without its body and in need of restoration.
In 1984 Robinson Coachbuilders was commissioned to build and fit a Continental Touring Body which is present today.
In 1991 the car was sold at auction with the chassis and mechanical parts unrestored and showing engine number 97D which is still present today.
The chassis and mechanical restoration has been undertaken by the reputable Allan Glew and Steve Penny.
26PE was then shipped to South Africa where the previous owner Stuart Halsall was living. During this time a complete overhaul took place whilst being enjoyed on many tours which included a journey from Cape town to Natal 3000kms round trip.
26PE was returned to the UK in 2007 and during this time was awarded The Alpine Trophy by the 20-Ghost Club for the longest distance travelled in one year.

26PE is presented in fantastic condition with its beautiful white coachwork with 5 matching wheels, over the stunning tan leather interior and black mohair hood, complemented by stunning brightwork, running board toolbox and side mounted spare wheel and period trunk to complement this iconic piece of history.
