Introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1960, the Flavia marked an important development for the marque. Conceived under technical director Antonio Fessia, it combined front-wheel drive with an aluminium, horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine and disc brakes on all four wheels. This advanced specification established the foundations for a range encompassing saloon, coupé, convertible and Sport derivatives. Unveiled in 1962, the Zagato-bodied Flavia Sport gave this sophisticated mechanical package a particularly adventurous interpretation. Designed by Ercole Spada, its striking aluminium coachwork featured an unconventional nose, wraparound windscreen and distinctive side glazing extending into the roof. A steel supporting structure beneath the lightweight outer panels combined strength with reduced weight, while the low-mounted boxer engine contributed to a low centre of gravity. Initially offered with a 1. 5-litre engine and subsequently developed in 1. 8-litre form, the Flavia Sport brought together Lancia’s engineering individuality and Zagato’s tradition of purposeful, aerodynamic design. The Flavia family also played an important role in the early competition activities of Cesare Fiorio’s HF organisation, helping lay the foundations for Lancia’s subsequent sporting successes. Today, the Sport remains an unusual and compelling expression of Italian coachbuilding, appealing to collectors who value technical sophistication, distinctive styling and the partnership between two celebrated automotive names. Finished in its original colour of Inglewood Grey with a red interior, this 1965 Lancia Flavia Sport Zagato was purchased by the vendor in 1989 and subsequently restored between 1990 and 1994. An extensive accompanying history file includes photographs taken before and during the restoration, an old-style logbook, past MOT certificates, original Lancia colour and upholstery charts, correspondence from Zagato dated 1991 and numerous maintenance and restoration invoices. The car is also understood to have featured on the front cover of Classic & Sports Car in March 1996. The vendor advises that the engine was rebuilt by renowned specialist Guy Croft in 2011, incorporating a 2-litre cylinder head, while the original engine block accompanies the car. Further recorded attention includes work to the track rod ends and wheel bearings in 2021, together with recommissioning of the speedometer. Although some areas of the bodywork require attention, this distinctive Zagato offers considerable potential for further improvement. Prospective purchasers should note that the vendor reports a discrepancy in the chassis number recorded on the V5C, which reads ‘1694’ rather than ‘1594’; this will require clarification and correction through the DVLA. With its long-term ownership, extensive documentation and striking coachwork, this rare Lancia presents an appealing opportunity for an enthusiast of the marque. ** Bidding will take place live at the venue, online via our H&H website, by telephone and commission - T&Cs apply** Entry by catalogue and can be purchased for £20 (admits 2...
