1933 MG L1 Magna

Following the highly successful ‘My Type Midget, MG were to introduce a new line of small 6-cylinder models commencing with the ‘F’ Type Magna, which was powered by a 1271cc engine which had first appeared in the Wolseley Hornet. The quest for smooth running was to see a number of manufacturers take the ‘light six’ direction, which became a very popular genre for buyers of smaller cars who required refinement.

MG’s F1 model sold well with some 1250 being produced before the model was superseded by the ‘L1’, which was also a small four seat sports model, but was fitted with a modified engine sharing the shorter stroke of the ‘K’ Series Magnette. Now displacing 1086cc, it was to boast a crossflow cylinder head which gave a welcome boost of power over the earlier ‘F1’ model, with a maximum speed of 75 mph - quite something for a car in the under 1100cc class in its day.

Also available was a two-seater version, designated ‘L2’ along with a closed ‘Salonette’ which was known as the Continental Coupe. As with the previous model, the L Types featured a stylish sloping radiator which added to the purposeful, sporting appearance.

In total, 486 L1 models were built between 1933 - 1934.

The L1 Magna we offer for sale here is of 1933 manufacture and was the subject of a restoration from the bare chassis, understood to have been carried out during the 1990’s, there being a number of photos in the file showing the work in progress.

Finished in Midnight Blue, this fine six-cylinder MG is of excellent appearance, with full weather equipment.

Recently, a considerable amount of work has been undertaken by highly regarded ‘MMM’ MG specialists, Baynton Jones. This included fitment of a fully rebuilt pre-selector gearbox.

The list of work carried out and parts used is too extensive to list here, however, interested parties are welcome to request a copy.
