Monorail milestone to be celebrated at Beaulieu
Britain’s oldest monorail is to be celebrated at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Hampshire

The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu is almost as old as the classic car hobby itself and it’s easy to forget what a pioneering venture it was in the early days.

Indeed, the Beaulieu site is home to what is recognised as the oldest monorail system in the country, which celebrates its 50th birthday this summer.

Opened back in July 1974 in a gala ceremony which included a guest appearance by children’s TV favourites The Wombles, Beaulieu’s monorail was originally installed at a Butlin’s holiday camp and featured ‘bullet’ style cars. These were modified to allow more passenger space and the 1.6km route travels through the roof of the motor museum itself, allowing an aerial view of the exhibits.

A 50th anniversary celebration is scheduled for July 31, with admission included in the general ticket. Attractions include a return visit from the Wombles, plus an exhibition charting the monorail’s history and activities including face painting and a jazz band. There will also be a gift shop range of anniversary-themed merchandise and visitors are encouraged to dress up in 1970s attire.
