Much like the VW Golf has evolved throughout the years, so did its radio systems. Back in the 1970s, you only had two knobs and three buttons to play with, a far cry from today's Golf 7.5 with its intricate infotainment system. The first one didn't even have a cassette player whereas the current model can recognize gestures and play music coming from your smartphone without even having to physically connect it to the infotainment.
The following slideshow perfectly illustrates how an important feature of a car has evolved in the case of the Golf, one of the most popular nameplates in the business. It has been around for more than four decades and nowadays it's hard to find someone with a license that hasn't driven one of the seven generations of the compact model.
In regards to the future, physical controls could quite possibly be dropped altogether considering the range-topping Discover Pro has already lost them. It's just a big 9.2-inch touchscreen with a fancy glass design that some people like, while others would still prefer knobs for the simple things like volume and changing stations.
