This special edition Pontiac Firebird Trans Am looks identical to the car that starred in Smokey and the Bandit II.

Some cars are synonymous with their iconic on-screen roles. Think of the DeLorean, and you immediately think of Back To The Future, for example. The same is true for the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, which starred in the cult classic Smokey and the Bandit movie trilogy and the original Knight Rider TV series. This week happens to mark the 40th anniversary of the original Smokey and the Bandit film, and if you've ever fantasized about being the Bandit we've found the perfect car.

To promote the theatrical release of Smokey and the Bandit II back in 1980, Pontiac produced a special edition of the Trans Am made to look exactly like its movie counterpart – and one of them is heading to the Barrett Jackson Northeast auction next month. This rare 1980 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Smokey and the Bandit Edition features the same black and gold livery as the iconic movie car – yes, that means you get the famous gold screaming chicken donning the hood with matching gold wheels. Camel-colored cloth dominates the interior, and a 4.9-liter turbocharged V8 lurks under the hood connected to a three-speed automatic transmission.

It also features upgraded suspension as part of the WS6 performance package, so it should be a hoot to handle. Only 3,444 examples of this special edition Trans Am were made, but hardcore fans of the series will be happy to know that this one is in immaculate condition. The body and undercarriage are devoid of rust and all the body panels are original. The engine was rebuilt in 2005 and received a comprehensive body-off restoration. It has around 70,000 miles on the clock, but the overall condition of this special edition Trans Am would make Burt Reynolds proud. There's no reserve price, though a similar example sold for $110,000 at last year's Barrett Jackson Northeast auction, albeit with only 750 miles on the clock.
