1965 Ford Galaxie 500 Custom
While classic Ford Galaxie 500s can sometimes be found for modest prices, a heavily customized 1965 model is aiming for supercar territory.

The result of an intensive three-year build, this one-off creation blends the timeless lines of the mid-sixties Ford full-sizer with modern Mustang V8 power, air suspension, and a completely bespoke interior. Mecum Auctions estimates the car, Lot S310, up for auction on Saturday, May 17, could sell for between $175,000 and $200,000.

Under the hood lies the heart of the transformation: a modern Ford 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine. It was sourced from a 2011 model year vehicle and custom-built for this Galaxie by Engines by JB. While the exact horsepower output is not listed, these engines are known for producing well over 400 horsepower in stock form, offering a massive upgrade over the Galaxie's original powerplant. The V8 breathes through Flowtech headers and a custom powder-coated exhaust system. Feeding the engine is a Holley electric fuel pump and regulator. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt six-speed automatic transmission and an aluminum driveshaft, which in turn powers a custom nine-inch rear end featuring new axles and bearings. The engine bay itself is spotless, showcasing details like a Top Street Performance accessory front drive and a Leadfoot Racing radiator.

To properly manage the Coyote V8’s output and achieve the desired custom look, the Galaxie’s underpinnings received a complete overhaul. The original frame was boxed and reinforced, with components smoothed and painted Graphite Gray for a show-quality finish.

Gone is the stock suspension, replaced by a RideTech Air Ride system allowing for adjustable height and contributing to the car's incredibly low stance. Handling is further enhanced by Hotchkis and PMT adjustable control arms, front and rear sway bars, new ball joints, and bushings throughout. Bringing the heavily modified classic to a stop are modern Wilwood high-performance disc brakes at all corners, visible behind large MMR alloy wheels wrapped in Continental tires.

Classic Style, Completely Custom Execution
The exterior expertly blends the Galaxie's original '65 lines with extensive custom touches. The bodywork, finished in Brilliant Silver, features numerous modifications. The rocker panels were extended three inches to cleanly cover the pinch welds, creating a smoother look. Both front and rear bumpers were cut, tucked closer to the body, and smoothed. All factory emblems were shaved for a cleaner appearance.

At the rear, custom one-off taillights provide a modern signature, complemented by a flush-mounted third brake light. Hand-fabricated elements include a subtle front splitter below the grille and a custom rear diffuser integrated below the tucked rear bumper, along with a discrete rear spoiler lip on the trunk lid.

The custom work continues inside, where virtually nothing appears stock. Paul’s Custom Interiors handled the transformation, trimming nearly every surface in plush blue leather with unique diamond stitching. Modern Procar bucket seats replaced the original bench. A dashboard sourced from a 1963 Galaxie provides a vintage touch but houses modern Dakota Digital gauges integrated via a CAN interface module. A custom center console flows between the seats, and occupants benefit from modern Vintage Air climate control and a Pioneer/Alpine audio system. Even the trunk is fully finished in matching blue diamond-stitched material.

This 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 Custom represents a significant investment in time and high-end components. The end result is a unique ride that blends classic American style with modern performance and luxury touches. With its six-figure estimate, it is set to be a crown jewel at Mecum's upcoming Indy auction.
