Offered for sale is this very rare RHD, 1964 "Container Van". There are fewer of these than the cherished Barn Door Samba model. A box van manufactured by VW themselves, not an aftermarket conversion.

From 1962 to 1968 VW Australia produced only 123 of its box/delivery vans. The Box or "Container Van" as it was known was built at the Clayton factory and although based around a standard panel van it was a special body model. Despite being popular with delivery fleets and courier companies they were considerably more expensive than standard models.

According to David Eccles of the Split Screen Van Club this is one of 17 known surviving Container Vans in the world, some in need of major restoration and one of 4 in the U.K. and one of two of those in a roadworthy condition.

Originally supplied to the Australian Army it was used by them as a mobile base for measuring bomb blasts when testing in the outback.

It was sold by Vic Bahn from Australia in 2009 to Brian Bussell who imported it to the UK. He went on to convert it for use as a "Street food truck" specialising in Mexican food under the name of Chilli Gone Barmy.

Although the van was in very good order running a Rancho gearbox it was given a makeover mechanically. CSP front disc brake conversion, Creative Engineering steering rack conversion, T2D dropped spindles, IRS conversion, 1600 twin port engine running twin Kadron carburettors and a vacuum distributor from Mr Kadron at LowBugget in the USA.
Brian traded out of it for around four years at various VW events, festivals and weddings. We then bought it with the intention of continuing to use it to sell Mexican food. We gave it a cosmetic makeover, installed a combination safe/cash store under the front seats and insulated the "box" so as to reduce the heat build up in the summer months. We added a set of 15" Beetle wheels which were painted to go with the van livery and branding. Unfortunately circumstances changed and we never got as far as having it applied to the van.
This is now a "ready to go" blank canvas for someone to use as a catering business, be it food truck, ice cream van or mobile bar for wedding or corporate events.

Alternatively this could easily be returned to stock and restored to museum standards and would make a very special addition to any VW collection.
