Seller's comments about 1965' Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Gta 1600
The car on offer, chassis n° AR 613526, was delivered to her first owner in July 1965 by GAP in the Loire-Atlantique region. At the end of 1966, she was sold to an Alfa enthusiast living in the Cher region who already had several other Alfas in his garage. The GTA participated in several local hillclimb competitions, such as Marsannay in 1968 and Haut Cantal in 1969, as well as one at Aosta in northern Italy in 1969. She was originally white but photos from this period show that she had been repainted in red and had been prepared by Baseli GTA. Unfortunately, the owner was killed in 1972 in a road accident while driving his commercial van. The GTA continued to be driven by his wife just for short trips until 1975, when it ceased to be used on the road, as is shown by the annual licence sticker on the windscreen.
When the present owner bought the car in 1984, she had not turned a wheel for nine years but she was still very well preserved. Both Alfa specialist and historic racing enthusiast, he planned to prepare the car for the track, but a lack of time and the maintenance of the other cars in his collection prevented him from going through with this project.
So in the end, and this is a real stroke of luck, this GTA has remained in its exact original specification. This means that she still has her twin-spark 1600 cc engine (with camshaft covers, magnesium sump and the extremely rare original Weber 45 DCOE14 carburettors), as well as other specific GTA components such as the close-ratio 5-speed gearbox, the rear axle, the propeller shafts, the coolant and oil radiators, the six inch wide Campagnolo alloy wheels and the rare original GTA seats.
With sale in view, the car has simply been repainted in its original white, which is extremely rare, as the vast majority of the 501 cars produced were painted red. The engine (which is not the original unit but an absolutely identical block which was already in the car when she changed hands in 1984) has been overhauled by an Alfa specialist in the Aisne département (invoices supplied). The brakes have been renovated with new discs, calipers, master-cylinder and pressure limiter. The clutch, shock-absorbers and rear springs have been replaced.
To find an Alfa Romeo GTA which is 100% authentic, never crashed, remarkably well preserved, with a comprehensive and clear history and in excellent condition with all necessary work done, is so rare for such a model as to be almost a miracle. The next owner of this machine, designed for competition, particularly polyvalent and competitive, will be able to use all its potential in numerous different contexts, such as the Tour Auto organized by Peter Auto, any number of track events, sprints, etc or simply enjoy invigorating drives on country roads.
