Seller's comments about 1932' Auburn Model 8-100

Shortly after E.L. Cords takeover of Auburn in 1924, the Indiana-based manufacturer was enjoying a remarkable renaissance. After years of building good quality but rather staid cars, Cord transformed Auburn into one of the most exciting American automobile companies of the time. Using engines supplied by Lycoming (part of Cords ever-growing business empire), Auburn established itself as a leader in the entry-level luxury market, with some of the most affordable and stylish 8-cylinder cars available to buyers.
Introduced in the late 1920s, the Boattail Speedster was designed to capture attention and draw customers into Auburn showrooms. Positioned prominently in dealership windows, its bold styling and sporting character made an unforgettable impression on passersby. While many customers ultimately purchased more practical Auburn models, the Speedster served as the aspirational centerpiece of the brand. Today, these cars remain among the most celebrated and recognizable American classics, prized for their flamboyant design and engaging driving character.
The 1932 Auburn 8-100A represented a refined evolution of the Speedster concept. Powered by a robust Lycoming straight-eight engine producing 100 horsepower, the 8-100A delivered lively performance for its time. Auburn equipped these models with a number of advanced features, including the innovative Columbia dual-range rear axle, which effectively provided additional gear ratios for improved flexibility on the road. Other notable innovations included the automatic Startix starter system, centralized chassis lubrication, adjustable shock absorbers, and four-wheel Steeldraulic drum brakestechnologies that reflected Auburns commitment to both performance and convenience.
The exceptional Auburn 8-100A Speedster offered here, chassis GU71104, represents one of the most authentic and carefully preserved examples of this iconic model. Certified by the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club as an original Speedster, it stands among a select group of genuine Boattail Speedsters surviving today.
This particular car benefits from a meticulous restoration carried out by noted Auburn Cord Duesenberg enthusiast Terry Peshia, with final finishing and assembly completed by the highly regarded specialists at LaVine Restorations. Peshia, a former president of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club and a respected authority on the marque, approached the project with exceptional care and dedication to authenticity. The result is a beautifully executed restoration that faithfully captures the dramatic presence and fine detailing that made the Speedster famous.
Following its restoration, this remarkable Auburn enjoyed a privileged life as a featured display vehicle at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum in Auburn, Indiana. For more than two decades it was exhibited within the historic factory building where these magnificent automobiles were originally produced. Carefully preserved in this museum setting, the car was maintained in exceptional condition while serving as a striking representation of Auburns legacy.
Finished in a vibrant turquoise complemented by contrasting black accents, the Speedsters dramatic lines are highlighted to stunning effect. The sweeping fenders and signature tapered tail are accentuated by brilliant brightwork and elegant detailing throughout. Gloss black wire wheels fitted with wide whitewall tires provide a period-correct finishing touch, while dual side-mounted spare tires with leather straps add both practicality and visual balance. A sharply raked windshield, gleaming headlamps, and a taut black canvas top complete the unmistakable Speedster profile.
Inside the cockpit, the black leather interior is beautifully crafted with careful attention to period-correct materials and detailing. Art Deco influences are evident throughout the cabin, from the intricate stitching patterns on the upholstery to the polished metal controls and elegantly designed dashboard instrumentation. Every surface reflects the craftsmanship and artistry that defined Auburns finest automobiles.
Today this Auburn remains one of the most impressive and authentic Boattail Speedsters extant. Recognized as the 2020 Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival Poster Car, its significance extends beyond its remarkable presentation to include its longstanding role as an ambassador for the marque. Combining outstanding authenticity, expert restoration, and an extraordinary history of museum display, this Auburn 8-100A Speedster represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of Americas most iconic and visually captivating automobiles.
