1954 AUSTIN A40 VAN - ESTATE CONVERSIONRegistration number: TAE 188Chassis number: GS4869828Engine number: GS4869828Mileage: 12, 975 miles indicatedExterior: Two-tone greenInterior: Brown leatherA particularly charming and evocative example of post-war British motoring, this 1954 Austin A40 Van benefits from an exceptionally long period of ownership, having been cherished by the previous owner since 1962. Originally conceived as a practical light commercial vehicle, TAE 188 acquired a rather more versatile character in 1961, when, according to the original RF60 registration document, it was converted to estate specification. This involved fitting windows to the side panels and installing a reclining rear bench seat upholstered in brown leather to complement the front seats. This documented period conversion lends the vehicle considerable individuality and provides a fascinating insight into the practical ingenuity of the era. The registration history records six previous owners two of whom were the same Bristol motor dealer, Bawns Ltd of Coronation Road. Since entering previous ownership in 1962, the Austin has remained a much-loved possession. Always garaged, it was placed on blocks for storage from 1999 onwards, with the vendor continuing to take a conscientious interest in its preservation. Regular applications of oil to the chassis and underside have evidently helped protect the structure, which is reported to have survived particularly well. The interior and engine compartment both appear notably sound and tidy, reflecting the sympathetic care lavished upon the vehicle over more than six decades. Finished in attractive two-tone green with a complementary brown leather interior, it retains considerable period charm, while the odometer displays 12, 975 miles. Now offered for sale, TAE 188 represents a rare opportunity to acquire a highly individual Austin with an unusually compelling ownership story. More than simply a surviving light commercial, this is a vehicle that has been treasured by one owner for over 60 years, retaining its documented history and the distinctive character of its early estate conversion. It is thought there are only around 45 half-tonne Austin commercial vehicles surviving in the UK.. This vehicle is located near from Newton Abbot, Devon TQ13 where it will need to be collected.
