1934' Austin Austin 7 7
1934 Austin 7 Beaufort Special
Reg. no. BXA 259
Chassis no. 215001
Engine no. M236107
In the mid-1980s the late Michael Williams and Colin Ladd of Beaufort Restorations, vintage car specialists of Maidstone, Kent, designed an ash-framed, fabric covered, two-seater body with aluminium bonnet and wings to fit the long wheelbase Austin Seven chassis. The prototype, influenced by the MG J2, was advertised in Austin Seven magazines and the motoring press. In total, three bodies were made. Number one (the prototype) was sold to a Swiss client (whereabouts of car unknown) and number two, sold as a kit to a UK buyer, was built and is in use. The vendor, having seen the original advertising and liking the look of the body, contacted Beaufort Restorations in 2009 to ask if any design drawings existed. Mike Williams responded with the news that the unassembled number three body kit, rolling chassis and two-bearing engine, was for sale in Rochester.
Following the purchase, a Pigsty-built chassis commissioned by the vendor was substituted and the engine was sent to Robert Forman for rebuilding using a Phoenix crank, a fast road cam, a high compression head, a four-into-one exhaust manifold and an SU carb. The body kit was assembled by Beaufort Restorations and finished by Robert Forman who installed 12v wiring and made interchangeable pedals to suit drivers of different heights. The Beaufort Special has a Vince Leek 4-speed close ratio gearbox worked by an Eltos remote gear lever and is set up for fast touring easily reaching 65mph when required.
The car was registered and MOT'd in June 2011 and it has successfully completed events both here and on the Continent. In July 2018, after 10,000 miles, the engine was re-bored to +60 and fitted with new rings to overcome excess oiling and it now needs running-in. The car is fitted with Brooklands aero screens, and a full and half tonneau. It also comes with a modified Morris 8 folding windscreen, a hood with detachable peak and frame sticks and also pedals to suit drivers of 5'2" and 6'1". All bills are present as are photographs of the body kit as found and during assembly plus a V5c.
This and 60 other classic cars and motorcycles will be sold on June 15th at Allington, near Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN14 6LJ. All enquiries to 01249 444544 or look at the fully illustrated catalogue online at richardedmondsauctions.com
