Seller's comments about 1987' Ford Sierra
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the BRDC Classic 2026 - Collectors' Cars on Saturday the 25th of July, The Wing, Silverstone Circuit, NN12 8TN. The arrival of the Ford Sierra in 1982 marked a dramatic departure from convention. Replacing the long-serving Cortina, Ford's boldly styled aerodynamic hatchback represented a new direction for the company and, perhaps more significantly, provided the ideal foundation for a new generation of competition machinery. Working in partnership with Cosworth, Ford developed what would become one of the most celebrated performance cars of the 1980s, the Sierra RS Cosworth.
Conceived primarily as a homologation special for Group A Touring Car racing, the Sierra RS Cosworth was engineered with competition very much at its heart. To satisfy FIA regulations, Ford was required to build 5, 000 road-going examples and ultimately produced 5, 545 three-door cars, including the legendary RS500 variants. Beneath the dramatic bodywork lay Cosworth's now iconic turbocharged 2. 0-litre YB engine, producing 204bhp in standard form and capable of propelling the Sierra to almost 150mph, figures that placed it firmly amongst the fastest and most desirable performance cars of its era.
Yet the Sierra RS Cosworth offered more than outright pace. Unlike many of its contemporaries, it combined exhilarating performance with genuine everyday usability. With its supportive Recaro-inspired interior, practical hatchback body and refined road manners, it appealed equally to company car drivers seeking an alternative to contemporary sporting saloons from Germany and to enthusiastic private buyers eager to experience one of the most exciting driver's cars of the decade.
Presented here is an exceptional example of this iconic performance Ford and one that stands apart on account of its extraordinary provenance, remarkably low mileage and highly original condition. First registered in 1987 and finished, as many would argue, in the definitive shade of Diamond White, this three-door Sierra RS Cosworth had covered a mere 6, 242 miles from new at the time of cataloguing. Such mileage is almost unheard of today, particularly in the case of a model so frequently modified, raced or simply enjoyed to the full during its early years.
Perhaps even more remarkable is the ownership history. This Cosworth has remained within the same family from new, spending its first 37 years with its original owner before passing to his son, who has retained the car for the past two years. Few examples can boast such continuity of custodianship and it is undoubtedly a significant contributor to the car's exceptional preservation.
After only a couple of years of sparing use, the Sierra was placed into private garage storage in 1988 - it still displays its 1988 tax disc. There it remained, carefully preserved and protected from the ravages of daily use. In 2015 the car was briefly recommissioned to ensure it remained operational before once again returning to storage. More recently, in 2025, it was recommissioned for the road once more, receiving an MOT and a sympathetic programme of maintenance designed to preserve its originality whilst ensuring continued usability.
Works undertaken as part of this recent recommissioning include the fitment of new hydraulic tappets, a new timing belt, replacement auxiliary drive belts and a new fuel pressure pump. The accompanying history file includes the car's original UK handbook pack, further reinforcing the authenticity and originality of this outstanding example.
The photographs speak volumes. The Diamond White paintwork, period interior trim, original switchgear and wonderfully unspoilt engine bay all suggest a car that has led a uniquely sheltered existence. In an era when many Sierra RS Cosworths have been extensively restored, modified or rebuilt, examples displaying this level of originality have become increasingly difficult to find.
Combining just 6, 242 miles from new, single-family ownership, extensive periods of careful storage and remarkable originality, this exceptional Sierra RS Cosworth represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of Ford's most revered performance icons in highly collectible, time-warp condition.
