It rests on an original Mercedes-Benz 190 SL chassis, built in 1959 at the Sindelfingen plant and originally delivered to the American market, whose authenticity is confirmed by an official Daimler AG certificate.Originally, the 190 SL was designed as an elegant roadster, positioned below the mythical 300 SL. Very quickly, Mercedes-Benz and some of its importers nevertheless envisaged a more radical variant intended for amateur drivers eager to compete. These lightweight versions, commonly known as Rennsport, were distinguished by a clean-bodied shell, specific equipment and optimised mechanicals. Produced in very small numbers and never truly industrialised, they took part in a few notable racing engagements, particularly in Asia, before fading away.The vehicle presented here sits within this tradition, in the form of a later “Tribute” build, faithful to the aesthetics, spirit and technical specifications of the historic 190 SL Rennsport. The conversion was carried out after the chassis was manufactured, most likely in the 2000s, a period during which this type of high-end conversions developed for historic rallies, demonstrations and classic events. It was not performed by Mercedes-Benz, but by a renowned specialist in Germany, following a coherent approach that respects the original model.The current configuration clearly emphasises lightness and driving pleasure. The car features a deliberately sporty presentation with a lightweight body, competition-inspired details, and a cabin oriented towards dynamic use. The engine, powered by a tuned four-cylinder and fed by Weber carburettors, delivers performance significantly higher than a standard 190 SL, enhanced by reduced weight and a sharpened chassis.It has regularly visited the Mechatronik Workshop in Germany for servicing, a leading name in Mercedes.Thanks to this configuration, the car is perfectly suited to active use: historic rallies, Mercedes Classic events, demonstrations or fast road outings.
