I am delighted to offer for sale this lovely little 1968 Morris Minor Traveller.

The car had been owned from by a lady from new until the mid-2000s and was then subject to a major bare-bones restoration a few years ago and has only covered a few thousand miles since. The restoration included:

• Replacement of the ash frame, guttering etc (the owner was a joiner so it has been done to an excellent standard!)
• Full bodywork restoration including two new steel front wings, rear wings (GRP), and various other panels
• Full professional respray
• Full overhaul of suspension, steering and brakes, including the fitment of a remote brake fluid reservoir in the engine bay
• Replacement wiring loom
• In the last few hundred miles, the car has been fitted with a reconditioned 1098cc engine, new timing chain, reground crank, new clutch, new radiator, and various engine ancillaries
• Unleaded cylinder head
• Innertia reel belts fitted in the front
• New carpet set
• …and much, much more!!!

This is a really great example of one of Britain’s favourite cars – charming looks, combined with simple mechanicals, means that the Moggy was a big hit for almost two decades. With its 1098cc A-Series engine, it’s cheap to insure for everyone (including youngsters – the Morris Minor Owners Club will be able to supply details for a cheap insurance scheme). Of course, being MOT and Tax exempt means it's an investment that will cost very little to run and maintain! This car was MOT tested for peace-of-mind in June 2019.

Bodily, the car is in astoundingly solid order! All of the external steel panelwork is very good indeed, even the door bottoms are in very good order. The rain gutters aren’t full of filler, like most are. It’s nice to see a car that has had a major restoration and isn’t the usual Traveller that has been tarted and botched over the years. No, it’s not a show-winning concours car but it’s not the usual ‘average’ Moggy. The woodwork has been fitted to a very high standard, and remains in A1 condition. The aluminium panelwork is in good order and was obviously repainted at the time of the restoration, along with the rest of the car. The brightwork polishes up well, but it is original so there is some pitting. Minilite style wheels have been fitted, along with matching tyres all round. I do have a set of original style wheels in silver, complete with hubcaps, if you would rather have the car fitted with those – the choice is yours.

Structurally the car is nice and straight. It has had a replacement chassis leg, along with a few other bits and bobs here and there but it isn’t the usual patchwork quilt of bad repairs. It hasn’t had loads of underseal splashed everywhere and the underside is clean and tidy, so you can see exactly what’s what. Again, I don’t think you’ll find a nicer car in this price range. Chassis legs, spring hangers, sills, inner wings etc all appear to be rock solid! If you view the car I think you’ll be very impressed with the state of the structure.

The interior is very clean and tidy. A replacement carpet set has been fitted, and the dashboard is in good order and free from paintwork chips. The door cards and rear seat look to be the originals but are in nice order. The car has been fitted with Ford Fiesta seats, which are hiding under some seat covers – they’re not in the best order and are probably the one thing that lets the car down. Easily replaced with originals (one original seat is included but will need some new padding!), but if you’re not fussed about looks they are very comfortable and supportive!

Mechanically, the engine starts and runs very healthily indeed, thanks to it being a recon engine, supplied and fitted by a Morris Minor specialist. An unleaded head has been fitted. It’s just had an oil change, carburettor rebuild, timing setup and a cooling system flush. It starts first time from both cold and hot, and pulls nicely. The gearbox doesn’t whine, and doesn’t jump out of gear either. The rear axle is nice and quiet and there are no clunks when taking up drive. It rides very well and there are no nasty bumps or rattles like you often get with unkempt examples.

The engine bay is very clean and tidy, as you will see in the pictures – no nasty repairs on the inner wings or bulkhead, and this was all repainted at the time of the restoration.

It’s so unusual to see such a straight, honest example of a Minor - this is a bargain price for a fantastic car which attracts a great deal of attention wherever it goes. If you come to view the car, I think you will be impressed with it – it’s certainly not a tarted-up example like so many others that you see for sale. Obviously it’s not a concourse car but it’s in very good order, and I challenge you to find a similar car in this price bracket. It’s worth noting that the car was subject to an insurance claim in the early 2000s when the old lady was in ownership, and the car was written off due to the rotten wood! However, don’t let this detract from what is effectively a fully rebuilt car so there is nothing to worry about. There are stacks of bills and receipts from the restoration which detail exactly what work has been done – and you can see for yourself just by looking at the car! To all intents and purposes, this is a healthy, reliable car that could be put into regular use without worry. You will be able to see this when you come to view.
