EXTERIOR
This Type 2 Low Light Dormobile is a genuine factory conversion from new with the original Dormobile Ltd. Folkstone registration plate affixed to the nearside fascia providing authenticity along with the original purchase invoice. Finished in Pastel White, (Code 90D), this remarkable Dormobile wears all factory fitted panels and displays vast areas of original paintwork which is quite incredible. Some professional remedial paintwork has been carried out to an exceptional yet sympathetic level and the overall appearance is truly beautiful. The level of originality that has been preserved is frankly breathtaking and extends to the glass and headlamps all etched with the vehicle registration, all original badges throughout, original number plates, sliding door closing instructions, inner fuel flap labels and factory Dormobile stickers to the rear as well as the Dormobile model D4/ 6 label to the nearside cab door. The pop-up roof is the original Red/ White stripe fitment fully intact with no holes but some age-related fading. A marvellous unspoilt example.
INTERIOR
The perfect compromise between originality and modern functionality. The cab area still boasts factory seats, door cards and floor covering as well as all interior exposed paintwork original with some light aging. Expensive Wolfsburg steering wheel and Empi gear shifter are fitted with the originals retained. Loose fitted hessian floor covering and dash top covers co-ordinate perfectly. The Dormobile registration plate and factory build plates remain fitted as does the paint code label and interior warning labels. The original Blaupunkt radio is fitted but inoperative. The camping area has benefitted from an expensive interior refit from Van Wurks of Oldham as detailed in the above specification. The interior is pristine with zero use and the standard of fitment and installation seamless. Traditional meets modern with full leather seat coverings and traditional style cabinets yet LED lighting and top of the range modern appliances. The original pop-up roof operates effortlessly and the factory supplied children’s hammocks are fully intact.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The four-cylinder flat four air cooled engine with a capacity of 1600cc produces 50 bhp and is a mechanical delight with fastidious maintenance using correct grade oils and quality parts. The engine bay is unrestored with some welcome aging and the chassis and engine numbers are clearly visible to match that of the service booklet confirming matching number credentials. The fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox performs exactly as it should. A clear separation from the majority of modified and bodged examples often seen, this is Type-2 performance at its best!
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The steel wheels are in pristine condition with the addition of high-quality Wolfsburg chrome hubcaps and outer rings. Matching quality Toyo van-rated 195/ 75 R14C are fitted all-round. A dual hydraulic brake system incorporating dashboard warning light and front self-adjusting discs operate exactly as Volkswagen intended.
HISTORY FILE
This UK example was registered new on the 1st June 1971 by supplying Volkswagen Main Dealer, Birch’s Garage Ltd in Cambridge. Incredibly just three owners and 53, 972 miles from new, this very special Dormobile was a factory conversion from new rather than one which was carried out retrospectively. The first owner, a Mr R. C. Cain Esq, purchased the vehicle and paid £1, 401 as evidenced by the original order form, sales invoice and payment docket which remarkably have all been kept! Mr Cain loved the Dormobile for 30 years with strict dry storage and dry day usage was paramount and there is even a detailed maintenance log spanning from 1979 to 2000. On recommendation from a friend and fellow Volkswagen fanatic, the second owner approached Mr Cain in 2001 and agreed a deal to buy the vehicle and found that it was every bit as original and incredible as he as been promised. In the hands of the second owner for 19 years, there has been just one change of keeper since.
A vehicle history file makes for wonderful perusal and includes the service record, handbook and very rare VW diagnostic coupon booklet! A Volkswagen Camper and Commercial magazine feature from 2014 featuring this Dormobile not only covers six pages but is also even the centre fold poster! Without question one of the best Type 2 example in existence and seldomly available to the open market. Buy it while you can.
