O. T. - September 2025 Odometer - 89, 503 In 1962 ‘USL121’ represented the second most upmarket and luxurious iteration of BMC’s iconic Mini. Along with the Riley Elf, the Hornet was a shrewd and early example of badge engineering designed to snare the more discerning and mature owners into the cult of the Mini. ‘USL 121’ appears to have been diligently restored by a previous owner and has been enjoyed by its current and tenth keeper since August 2023. Presenting today with a sensible 89, 500 miles recorded, less than 5, 000 of those have been added in the last 15 years. The current owner commissioned some key remedial works and now reports that ‘USL121’ starts, runs and drives as it should. This is further underscored by an advisory free MOT which is valid until September 2025. Offered here with NO RESERVE, a Heritage Certificate and original owner’s manual. Both the Wolseley Hornet and its slightly more expensive sibling the Riley Elf were fitted with special bodies built by Fisher & Ludlow under their "Fisholow" brand name. These transformed the Mini into more of a traditional three box saloon, as well as allowing the fitting of grand looking radiator cowls and a more commodious boot between the vestigial rear fins. ‘USL121’ wears these upgrades exceptionally well presenting in Birch Grey (GR3) with plenty of brightwork adornments. That upright Wolseley grill with its oval emblem that illuminates with the lights is especially prominent. The familiar Mini interior is enhanced here with Cardinal Red upholstery and deeper pile, mid grey carpets giving the charming utilitarian Mini cabin a significant upgrade. ‘USL121’ came to the current owner with a reluctant gear change. He commissioned a renowned Mini specialist to investigate and an issue with the crankshaft was identified. With the crankshaft reground and new bearings fitted, the issue was resolved. The specialist replaced the timing chain at the same time and reported that ‘USL121’ was delivering excellent oil pressure, and the engine, clutch and gearbox were in good order. ‘USL121’ has just been fully serviced, is fitted with a retro-look Bluetooth radio and under seat speakers and is ready to use and enjoy immediately. In summary: · An early, 1962 MKI example of the Hornet and the only one currently registered with DVLA · Benefitting from an earlier, full restoration and in a fine overall condition · Reported to be in fine mechanical condition with a long, advisory free MOT This Car has been entered into Hampson Auctions, The Bolesworth classic and performance car and motorcycle auction, which will be held at Bolesworth Castle, Tattenhall, Chester, CH3 9JJ on Sunday 24th November 2024.
