1926 Ford Model T Roadster Pickup It was not until the fall of 1924 that Ford offered a factory-built pickup. The Roadster Pickup, as is was called, was available as a 1925 model that was built from runabout components and modified to accept a new purpose-built pickup box. It was immediately popular, as nearly 34,000 were sold for the year. Presenting an opportunity not soon to be repeated, this 1926 Roadster pickup is seldom seen, even though production of them was over 34,000 in 1926. They either rusted away or were simply used to worn out status. Our consignment presents in previously restored form, and has a very nice overall patina, and used look. It is not perfect, but in perfect truck condition, with a few dents and dings showing usage as it was meant to be. Overall a solid example way back from 1926. Exterior Bathed in a thin coat of red with some primer showing underneath, it nearly appears as if this finish was intentional, as it has a clear coat on top of it. Steel panels are rust free, and there are a few areas of some metal not perfectly aligned, but it goes with the overall look. Utilitarian would be the look, a worker bee if you will, with a black radiator surround with nicely worn brass winged and FORD radiator cap. This is flanked by a single headlight on either side as well as a side fender which curves upward then downward and eventually into a running board. In the back a rear fender moves upward and over the rear tires. A nice metal sided box with stake body wood side additions in oak which are in very good condition. Our trucks bed is rust free and has oak inserts. The passenger compartment is covered in black canvas, no windows, and a fold out windshield, surrounded in black metal trim. The top is in nice condition with no rips or tears, or even signs of wear. More wood for the spoked wheels, which have red metal wheel surrounds and a black center hub. Nicely preserved used condition. Interior Slipping inside we note black padded vinyl covering the door panels, and other panels surrounding the single bench seat. This is covered with black vinyl as well and is in very good condition. The metal dash offers up the similar patina faded, and rust dimpled but clear coated dash and central oval for the gauge and ignition/light switch panel. All this is fronted by the large steering wheel, original to the car/truck. Drivetrain Opening the dual cowled vented hood, we see a working 177ci inline 4-cylinder engine. It presents itself in the similar exterior patina and use, however all hoses and belts are in good condition. Noted is a 1-barrel carburetor, and a 2-speed planetary gearbox attached to the back. A 3.63 rear axle ratio is in use. Undercarriage Some surface rust, but a restored frame and all solid along with the wood underside from the above bed. Running boards have been replaced as have body hangers so these are real solid for the taking. Transverse leaf spring suspension is all around, and mechanical drum brakes are on back only. All looking good underneath. Drive-Ability If you know the pedals, it is a pleasure to drive, it starts, runs, and sounds like a Model T, and shifts and drives smoothly. Remember it is 1926, so you are not meant to light the world on fire with speed, but it will get you there. Slow and steady wins the race! A nicely done restoration making it look used but in good condition. Not perfect with its faults, but lets just say when you do a walk around, it is worth the trip because it has plenty of character. Thats just the way I like it, and it is a truck!
