Registration No: UL 7905 Chassis No: 5046K MOT: ExemptKnown to The Sunbeam Register since the 1950s and treated to much past restoration workThe subject of an article in the June 2002 issue of Motorsport magazine by Bill BoddyWell travelled with sorties to Germany, France and JuraSaid to have had £20, 000 spent on it over the past twelve yearsThe 1920s witnessed Sunbeam win the French and Spanish Grand Prixs, finish second at Le Mans and set numerous Land Speed Records. Introduced in 1926, the 16. 9hp was powered by a 2035cc (later 2193cc) OHV straight-six engine allied to four-speed manual transmission. Reputedly capable of over 60mph (coachwork permitting), some 3, 495 16. 9hp cars are thought to have been made before the model was revised for 1931. Though, today survivors are comparatively few and far between.According to a June 2002 Motorsport magazine article entitled ‘Sweet Sunbeam Sixteen’ that was penned by founding editor Bill Boddy (whose wife had established The Sunbeam Register), chassis 5046K was issued with the London number plate ‘UL 7905’ on March 13th 1929. Surviving WW2, the Two-Seater with Dickey is known to have belonged to L. T. Wheeler Esq by 1950. Passing to his son six years later, the 16. 9hp was then bought by marque enthusiast J. Lester Logue Esq who embarked upon a restoration which was only completed after his successor, Kenneth Dodd Esq, took possession during 1982. H. R. Mothersole Esq acquired ‘UL 7905’ in April 1986 only to sell it to Alan Pryor Esq. the following September. The latter covered some 16, 200 miles aboard the Sunbeam including a trip to the Black Forest and the Sunbeam Talbot Darracq Register’s French and Jura rallies. Mr Pryor also reputedly treated the Two-Seater to some £18, 800 worth of professional fettling in 1995. The 16. 9hp is further understood to have had an additional £20, 000 or so spent on it since 2014 (including a cylinder head refurbishment six years ago). The Sunbeam’s last long run was a 300-mile round trip to Beauileu for a STD meeting during June 2021, while its last MOT certificate expired in October 2024. Currently running and driving but sparingly used of late, ‘UL 7905’ would benefit from a thorough check over and recommissioning. A delightful Vintage Tourer with a well-documented history.
