The Citroën 5 HP Type C is one of the most interesting small cars produced in France in the first half of the 1920s. The C3 variant is a later version built on a lengthened chassis, which appeared at the turn of 1923–1924. The 5 HP was unusually compact, lightweight and easy to handle, and Citroën deliberately marketed it to women and younger drivers at the time – at a time when car advertising was aimed almost exclusively at men. The range was produced between 1922 and 1926, with over 80, 000 cars built. This particular example dates from 1924 and is fitted with an 856 cm³ inline four-cylinder engine; the factory specifications state a bore of 55 mm, a stroke of 90 mm and a power output of approximately 11 k at 2, 100 rpm. The design features rear-wheel drive and a three-speed manual gearbox. The car is mechanically sound and roadworthy; the engine has undergone a complete overhaul. The bodywork paintwork shows minor imperfections and signs of wear consistent with the car’s age and its historic character. The canvas folding roof is currently missing.
