1982 Ford Capri 1600L 1. 6 – 61, 000 Miles
A great opportunity to get into classic Ford ownership without spending a fortune.
This 1982 Ford Capri 1600L is finished in classic red and has covered just 61, 000 miles – exceptionally low mileage for a car now 44 years old.
The bodywork does show signs of age, as you'd expect, but we've recently given her a full compound and polish and the transformation has been incredible – the before and after photos really speak for themselves.
This isn't being advertised as a concours example. Instead, it's an affordable, usable entry-level classic that can be enjoyed exactly as she is, while leaving plenty of scope for some straightforward cosmetic improvements to bring her back to her former glory.
According to a previous owner, who owned the Capri for 14 years before selling her last year, there were fewer than 50 examples of this particular model registered in the UK at the time. She has had just 6 previous owners, with a couple of those being long-term custodians.
Category C History
The Capri was recorded as a Category C insurance write-off in 2017. We have been given the following explanation from the owner at the time:
While being loaded onto a trailer for repairs, the car sustained damage to the left front wing. It wasn't involved in a road accident. The owner contacted his insurance company, who surprisingly decided to write the car off due to the cost of repair versus its value at the time. He subsequently sourced a replacement wing himself, had the damage repaired and put the car straight back on the road.
Mechanically
She starts, drives and stops very well, with a smooth gearbox and a strong-running 1. 6-litre engine.
Recent work and parts include:
* Weber carburettor
* Recent exhaust
* New battery
* Master cylinder
* RS-style alloy wheels in excellent condition with good tyres
The manifold heat shield could do with replacing, but this is a very small job and has no effect on how the car drives.
The original steel wheels are also included with the vehicle.
Interior
The interior has survived remarkably well for its age. The driver's seat is showing some wear and is beginning to separate at the seam, but the remainder is exceptionally tidy – the rear seat looks as though it's barely been sat in.
She even retains her original stereo, which is a lovely period touch.
There is also a history file containing old MOT certificates and other paperwork.
Overall, this is an honest, usable and increasingly difficult-to-find Capri. She's not perfect, and we've priced her accordingly, but she represents a very affordable way into one of Britain's most recognisable classic Fords.
