Comentarios del vendedor sobre 1972' Porsche 914

In 1970, Porsche thought it had a clever idea. Together with Volkswagen, it would build an affordable mid-engined sports car, a car for the people with the dynamics of something far more expensive. The 914 was the result. Only, not everyone got it straight away. Too Volkswagen for the Porsche purists, too Porsche for the VW drivers, and with its four-cylinder hardly the sort of car that would make your local 911 owner nervous on a Sunday morning. Then came the 914-6. Porsche set the four-cylinder aside and fitted the six-cylinder boxer from the 911 behind the driver. Suddenly the penny dropped. The ultimate development became the 914-6 GT, which took the car racing and won its class at Le Mans in 1970. Low weight, mid-engine, six cylinders and wide wheel arches: in hindsight, the recipe needed little explaining. An original 914-6 GT is nowadays reserved for people whose bank manager answers the phone in person. This car does not pretend to be one, either. It began life as a Californian Porsche 914 and, from 2019, was fully stripped and rebuilt following the same philosophy, but with more than fifty years of technical progress and a considerably more powerful six-cylinder at its disposal. And by fully rebuilt, we do not mean: drop in an engine, bolt on some wide arches and call it a success. The bodywork was completely reworked and fitted with steel GT flares. No polyester add-ons, but genuinely widened panelwork, exactly what you want to see on a serious 914 GT build. The complete restoration, the bodywork, the paintwork and the subsequent build were extensively documented in photographs. The result stands here in Grün Metallic, low and wide on its wheels, with precisely the right balance between a classic 914 and the far more aggressive GT version.Behind the driver then sits the most important part of the story: a 3. 2 litre Porsche six-cylinder, type 930/ 25 from 1989, engine number 64K13088. Before the conversion, the engine was fully rebuilt and now delivers close to 300 bhp. In a 911 Carrera, a 3. 2 is hardly a dull engine. In a small, light mid-engined Porsche, it becomes a different story altogether. But this is precisely where the difference lies between simply stuffing lots of power into an old car and building a good car. The complete driveline and everything around it were addressed. The 3. 2 is mated to a fully rebuilt Porsche 915 gearbox with sideshift conversion, 915 differential sideplate, electronic speedometer sensor and a new clutch. A Patrick Motorsports lightweight flywheel of just 3. 4 kilograms with 9-bolt fixing was also fitted. The result is a driveline that is not only far more serious than anything Porsche ever supplied as standard in a road 914, but that has genuinely been built up as a single, coherent whole. For the conversion, extensive use was made of components from Patrick Motorsports, one of the great names in the international 914 and 914-6 world. The special engine conversion mount, throttle cables, wiring harness, the flywheel and various other conversion parts all come from there. Not universal parts made to fit with a bit of creativity, but components developed specifically to integrate a six-cylinder driveline correctly into a 914.The same goes for the cooling. Up front sits a Patrick Motorsports oil cooling system, fed via the special GT front bumper and provided with a matching shroud in the front luggage compartment. Not only functional when the 3. 2 is put seriously to work, but also executed exactly as you would expect from a high-quality GT conversion. On the other side of the engine, once again we find no half measures. The car has an RSR Design stainless steel exhaust system from Mittelmotor, combined with their 38 mm stainless steel Rennkrümmer 914/ 6 exhaust headers. Mittelmotor has been a Porsche 914 specialist for decades, and together with Patrick Motorsports that puts you roughly at the addresses where you want to be shopping when you decide to build a 914 to this level. The result sounds exactly as you would expect a Porsche with a 3. 2 litre six-cylinder behind your back to sound. Not civilised, not overly theatrical, but mechanical and thoroughly present the moment you put the engine to work.Because speed only stays fun as long as you can also shed it again, the braking system was given serious attention too. Porsche 930 Turbo brakes handle the stopping, while the suspension, reinforcements and stabilisation have also been adapted to the car's performance. So the engineering here is not built around one spectacular figure; engine, transmission, cooling, brakes and chassis have all been tackled as a complete package. That is ultimately what sets this 914 apart. There are plenty of 914s into which a six-cylinder once ended up. There are also plenty of projects where someone started full of enthusiasm, discovered after three years what Porsche parts cost, and then handed the next owner some boxes of parts and an optimistic story.
