Commentaires du vendeur sur 1929' Buick Doctor’S Coupe

Rally Preparation Services is extremely pleased to offer this enchantingly honest 1929 Buick 121” wheelbase Doctor’s Coupe.

David Dunbar Buick’s early inventions include the garden water sprinkler and a manufacturing process for the white vitreous enamel cast iron bath. By the early 1900s he set himself to the development of the internal combustion engine. Like so many pioneering inventors Buick was a better engineer than he was businessman so although his overhead valve engines produced markedly better performance than the alternative side-valve competition he lost control of the Buick Manufacturing Company after just 2 years. The company was quickly absorbed into General Motors and became a very successful premium brand. In 1929, to mark the firm’s Silver Anniversary the model range was significantly updated, and many technical improvements introduced. The class leading OHV engine was retained but increased to 5.1 litres and now produced 90 bhp. The 121 models (with a wheelbase of 121 inches) had 6 body styles including 3 different Coupes. The Master Six Special Coupe and the Master Business Coupe essentially shared the same body while this car, a Master Six Coupe had a longer cabin more reminiscent of a 2 door sedan. The “Doctor’s Coupe” featured an interior consisting of a driver’s seat, a butler seat, a seat in the back and a secure wooden box for the doctor to safely store his all-important black bag.

This trouble-free charming coupe completed the 2019 Peking to Paris Motor Rally without even a change of spark plugs. In fact, the car enjoyed just minor routine maintenance every evening before the crew retired to the bar. It is remarkably original and is still wearing it’s first (if somewhat faded) coat of black paint. In preparation for the rally, the engine has been completely overhauled and the electrical system rebuilt using modern internals. The transmission is period as is the axle which is a floating bearing type, and both were stripped and inspected. Other sensible preparation works for such a tough long-distance rally included a new radiator core, a long-range fuel tank, new carburetor and a fuel filtration system. Inside the cabin the dash and instruments are all period and the original steering wheel still has the ignition advance and air controls. Although slightly incongruous, modern seats have been fitted for comfort but the originals (including the very rare “butler seat”) albeit all are in poor condition are included as is a comprehensive list of spares.

The car is currently with RPS’ sister company, the SASCo storage facility and available for inspection.
